A Guide to Bearded Dragon Basic Housing Requirements

AD | SPONSORED POST

A bearded dragon just like any other pet needs enough space and comfortable furnishings. The good news is that there is a wide range of housing, such as an enclosure, terrarium, or a tank. This variety of housing options makes it important for you to choose the right housing before you acquire a bearded dragon. A bearded dragon is easy to house, but you need to consider several factors when looking out for their ideal home. This page will show you the basic housing requirements for your dragon.

Types of housing

Bearded dragons require their own space to call home. Hence, you should consider having a housing that is usually in the form of an enclosure. Types of enclosures are categorized as inside and outside enclosures, but most of the pet bearded dragons spend most of their time in an inside enclosure. A suitable inside enclosure should feature the right sized aquariums and cabinets. While an inside housing is good for a bearded dragon, it’s important to make sure that it has access to the natural light. Therefore, you can also use an outside enclosure as temporary housing so that your pet can spend most of the time in it.

The housing requirements

Fortunately, a bearded dragon doesn’t need a lot of things in its housing. However, you should make sure that you consider the size, safety, ventilation, support, and cleanability of the enclosure. Below are the detailed requirements needed for your bearded dragon:

Size

Size is one of the most important requirements of a bearded dragon housing. Enclosures should have adequate space to support the size and number of bearded dragons you keep.

These pets need moving space, meaning the enclosure should be large enough to allow them to do all physical activities. You see, bearded dragons can sometimes be very active, so a single adult dragon should have a space of at least 35 x 14” (900 x 350 cm).

Ventilation

Ventilation will allow enough airflow and help in controlling heat. Hence, the enclosure should have adequate ventilation which can be either through a mesh or drilled holes. However, for inside enclosures, you should make sure that the ventilation is on both sides.

Safety

A bearded dragon should be protected at all times. So make sure that the housing’s escape routes, sharp objects, and high climbing places are safe and you should always protect them from potential predators. Above all, outside enclosures should be sealed off, even their top parts.

Cleanability

When setting up the housing for your bearded dragon, make sure that it’s positioned in the right way for easy cleaning regularly. If you position it too low or too high for easy accessibility, you might fail to spot clean it.

Aside from this, the sides of the housing should be smooth and be in a position to absorb a good amount of moisture. Mind you, cleaning the enclosure regularly can prevent health problems, such as Salmonella.
