It was an absolute delight to watch The Cher Show at the stunning Theatre Royal in Brighton yesterday evening.
The show is exquisite from beginning to end and perfectly portrays the story of Cher’s life from childhood through to her rise in fame over the years. The storytelling is sublime, and you really get an insight into the person that Cher is and the course her life has taken. Starting with her childhood where she experienced turmoil at school and being guided by the strong hand of her Mother Georgia (Tori Scott). Then through the highs and lows of her relationship and marriage with Sonny (Guy Woolf), the birth of her children and the rise and fall of her career through the years. With all of Cher’s greatest hits performed throughout the storytelling, the show is put together cleverly and succinctly.
The casting of the show is perfection with three powerhouses playing Cher through the years. The leading ladies – Debbie Kurup, Danielle Steers and Millie O’Connell are a force to be reckoned with. Their vocals were strong, pitch perfect, powerful and blew you away. When singing in harmony together they were impeccable. All three ladies nailed Cher’s unique personality, voice and vocal tone, making it believable and real to watch. Believe, Song for the Lonely and You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me, have to be among my favourite performances of the night.
They were supported by an incredible cast with Guy Woolf (alternate) playing Sonny brilliantly and portrayed the love he held for Cher, despite their ups and downs in a warm way. Tori Scott played Georgia, Cher’s Mother and it was lovely to get an insight into the strong and fierce woman she helped Cher to be and the positive impact she had during the course of her life from child to woman.
I was surprised and delighted to see that the show was spectacularly choreographed by Oti Mobusi who did an amazing job. Her moves were bought alive by a fantastic ensemble cast who filled the stage with their high energy and a spectacular performance from start to finish.
Iconic for her fashion choices, Cher’s costumes throughout do not disappoint. With glitter and sequins galore, each costume is stunning and dazzling in equal measure. Complimented by a fantastic set and phenomenal lighting design the aesthetics through the show are a visual delight.
Ending with a finale that has you singing, dancing and smiling from ear to ear, the audience are invited to get out their cameras and sing along with the cast. The atmosphere in the theatre was electric and the love from the audience to the cast was clear to see as they were rewarded with a well-deserved standing ovation.
The gorgeous and historical, 215-year-old Theatre Royal in Brighton is home to the show from 1st to 12th November. Located in the heart of Brighton, the theatre is easy to access and perfectly situated in the town centre. Staff at the theatre and exceptionally friendly and welcoming. The gorgeous bar is the perfect way to spend time before the show starts and throughout the interval.
If I Could Turn Back Time, I’d watch this show all over again! I’d recommend you book your tickets now, as this is sure to be a hit.
