The sun has been shining and the evenings are that little bit lighter. With the signs of Spring on its way I’ve been looking ahead to Easter as we have a lot of children in our family. I tend to stay away from chocolate gifts as I find that as we only enjoy sweets as an occasional treat my children end up with too much chocolate and often still have Christmas selection boxes still lingering! Instead I look for toys, games and other alternatives that can be enjoyed all year.
I am of an age that I remember the fun of playing Tetris as a child. I must have spent hours matching the coloured block pieces on our old computer trying over and over to beat my high score. There are so many much more high tech video games to play these days that my children love. But I’m quite nostalgic about Tetris, the simplicity and it’s a great logic puzzle. So I was rather excited to find out that John Adams has created a new card game based on the Tetris video game called Tetris Speed. We are a family of board and card game lovers, regularly having family game nights or spending wet weekends indoors playing. We love to get our hands on a new game to play.

Tetris Speed arrived in a small, compact cardboard box and all that is inside are the cards. No plastic pieces at all, although the cards did have plastic wrap on them. The game consists of 84 cards called Tetronimos plus some extra cards which have the instructions on. My first impression was how good quality the cards are. They felt sturdy and hard wearing. We had a quick run through of the rules and I was delighted to discover how simple and quick to learn the game is. I think games like that are great especially if you invite friends or family round to play that perhaps haven’t played before. I was soon excitedly reminiscing about Tetris and eager to start playing.

Tetris Speed is designed for 2-8 players and is suitable for 6+ years. Setting up the game was very simple. Some of the cards are blue and others white. For up to 4 players one lot of cards is used and for 5 or more all the cards are needed. One card, known as a Tetromino, is placed in the centre for all players to see. The remainder of the cards are dealt equally between players. Each Tetromino has a large Tetris block shape on, plus a smaller one next to it which is the Tetromino shape to play next. The aim of the game is to make matches and be the first to use up all your cards. Everyone plays at the same time so you have to keep a close eye to make sure you’re playing the right card. This meant there was soon chaos! It is a really fun, fast paced game. We had so much fun playing and it’s very quick to play, so we couldn’t help but to keep having more and more games.
This is one of those games that can be enjoyed by everyone. It’s great fun just for two people to play or for getting the whole family involved. It’s compact size also makes it fab for travelling or bringing over when visiting people. It will appeal to all ages. It really makes a lovely little present for Easter especially if you are looking for an alternative to chocolate.
