We snapped up the chance to review watches from SnapWatch once the kids saw the designs available and realised they were designed especially with kids in mind. We placed our order which was dispatched in under 24 hours and from that point on my son was constantly asking when it would arrive. He was thrilled when the postie brought them and didn’t want to wait for me to take pictures, he wanted it on immediately. I would never have guessed he’d be so keen. The girls were all much more relaxed but didn’t delay in opening them.
They’d all chosen different designs, Dragons for my son with several colourful dragons on the two décor panels. The eldest two chose Icy Black and Spring Purple. As teens they weren’t interested in the picture design but liked the plain colour options. We all really like the Spring Purple and the LED display looks so cool on that one in particular. The youngest chose Unicorns, similar to the Spring Purple but with the décor strips.
There are two other designs besides, the Sharkies on a blue strap and Astronauts on a black strap.
These designs are currently available in the UK and Europe and the SnapWatch website tells us they plan to expand into selling further afield too, viewing Asian and American markets.
When something is designed for kids we need it to be tough and ideally waterproof. Ideally indestructible. I have faith that the SnapWatch will be resilient. It feels like it can withstand some use and the fact that even the screen bends is reassuring. It works in both positions too, wrapped around the wrist or in the straight position.
I took a look at the website to learn a little more about the company and the product and I was delighted to find an exploded diagram which shows, in some detail, the component parts of the watches and how it remains bendy without compromising the quality, screen and usability.
I had a go at setting the time. I didn’t find it intuitive but there are simple instructions on the packaging and it didn’t take long before the older two knew how to set the time themselves and I just had the younger two to sort out.
There’s a choice for 12 or 24 hour clock settings, depending how confident your child is with telling the time. The display is quite large and this might help younger children with focusing on interpreting the time as they’re learning.
It’s helped my son to quickly get to grips with some time management, I’ve been able to tell him what time we need to leave for school or how long until bedtime and he checks the time to get an idea of how long he has until then. He’s working on it. We’ve also done the reverse, I’ve said we have X amount of minutes and he looks at his SnapWatch to work out what time that must mean.
My son wore his to school and it came home safely without being lost or dropped, the curve of the strap is adequately secure to withstand a primary school day. I like that it’s splashproof too.
There’s no signs of wear or rash on his arm, a feature which sometimes occurs with metal backed traditional watches or the range of activity watches available which are known for leaving a rash.
It’s a one size fits all gadget and it fit my mid teens just as well as the littlest. There’s no apps to download or special extras, it’s a straightforward, easy to put on, funky looking watch. The website tells us it has a replaceable battery which should last up to two years. That’s better than many watches aimed at kids. It’s safety approved which is another reassuring feature. Along with being recyclable.
It measures 185mm x 25mm x 8mm and you can find the range here: SnapWatch – The Happy Snappy Way to tell the time! At £14.99 each with free postage in the UK.
I like the idea of these for a gift, they’re appropriate for a wide age range and at a price which feels comfortable. It seems durable and something that the recipient could get use from for quite some time.
It could be an alternative to an Easter egg or a reward for an achievement. If nothing else it’s a fun and practical watch for a child. We’ve given it 5/5.
