I remember the original Rubik’s cube coming out and no matter how much I tried I never managed to complete it. Matching the colour on one side was easy but when you tried to get another side completed this is where everything went wrong. It was one of those toys that you could play with for hours and kept me and my sister occupied on many a long car journey.

Funnily enough my Mum found my Rubik’s cube a few weeks ago so my sons have been trying to complete it whilst we have been in lockdown. Neither of them have managed to completed it yet but they have been picking it up most days and playing with it. When I mentioned that we were going to be reviewing the Rubik’s Revolution they were quite excited although none of us could really imagine what an electronic Rubik’s cube would be like. Luckily we didn’t have to wait long for it to arrive and as the batteries were already in the cube we could start playing as soon as we took it out of the packaging.

The Rubik’s Revolution is a solid cube, none of the smaller cubes move like the original cube but it does look like a Rubik’s cube. Each side is a different colour, blue, green, yellow, orange, red and white and in the centre there is a hole with a button that you press to play the games. The buttons also light up in the colour of the side it is on.

There are six different games to play:

Light Speed (Blue light) – In this game the lights in the middle of the squares light up and you have to press them quickly before the time runs out. As soon as you have pressed the button another light lights up and if you take too long the cube makes a buzzer sound and then tells you your score. We all enjoyed this game and became quite competitive seeing who could keep going the longest.

Pattern Panic (Green light) – In this game the electronic voice tells you a colour and you then press the corresponding button. It then adds another colour and you have to repeat the sequence. It is quite easy to remember the colours at the start but it quickly becomes difficult remembering the correct sequence, especially when colours are repeated. This is a good memory test game and my sons were much better at it than I was!

Light Speed Trainer (Yellow light) – This is an easier version of the light speed game as two colours light up at the same time and you can press either of them and it will go on to the next light. It does speed up the more you press correctly. This is perfect for younger players and was a great way to get to grips with the cube.

Sounds Out (orange light) – Each side plays a short bit of music at varying sound levels, you have to press the colour that played the loudest music. I found this quite difficult and it was my least favourite game on the cube.

Multiplayer Madness (Red light) – You can play this game with up to 6 people, it asks you at the start how many people are playing and you press the corresponding colour to let the cube know. Once the game starts you press the button on the side that is lit up and then pass the cube to the next person to do the same. If a player presses the wrong colour or doesn’t press the button in time then they are out. The game continues until only one person is left. We started by all sitting around the kitchen table but progressed to playing it outside so we could spread out more to make it more difficult. We all really enjoyed this game and think it will be fun to play at Christmas with all the family.

Full Charge (White light) – One light at a time moves around all sides of the cube. When a light is pressed it will blink and to end the game you need to have all six sides blinking. We all struggled with this game and found it difficult knowing which side to press and invariably ran out of time.

Overall this is a great game, it is fun to play by yourself but is even better when you play with others, either in a competitive way to beat each other’s score or in the multi player madness game. My sons have kept going back to it, trying to beat their scores and we have all really enjoyed playing with it. It is small enough to pack when you go on holiday and I can see us playing with this a lot. It will definitely be coming out at Christmas as I know my family will love it!
