My granddaughter now 17 was diagnosed as having Coeliac Disease just over 2 years ago after four years of going backwards and forwards to the GP with tummy pain including a hospital admission for suspected appendicitis.

We spent a fortune buying different gluten free items for her to try including bread and bread rolls.   She was still experiencing pain despite her gluten free diet which we couldn’t understand, that is until we were told by other Coeliacs that manufactured gluten free biscuits and cookies often contained gluten free oats, Wow, the pain stopped!  She became very suspicious of shop bought Gluten Free items as was afraid of experiencing that pain again.  Believe me we tried her with virtually every brand of bread and rolls there were, attended Free From shows etc.  Many of the expensive gluten free loaves we found had tiny slices, most of which were so full of holes it was impossible to make a sandwich with.  She refused to try any more bread and rolls.

I started to make her bread myself using a basic gluten free Bread recipe I found online.  It tasted so good even her mother and myself liked it.  She took this bread to school simply buttered for her school lunch but once she finished school that was it, she stopped eating even home made bread.  I have not made any for her for over a year.

When we were offered the chance to try the Promise Gluten Free items, I initially turned them down for the reason my granddaughter had been refusing to eat any bread at all for over a year.  Then the box arrived containing bread and rolls!  Would she co-operate??

Promise Gluten Free Soft White Rolls
After several days of having these rolls in her home my granddaughter was eventually persuaded to try them.  Believe me it wasn’t easy.  Her mother had been out to buy ham and cheese specially for her so she could make a ham and cheese panini.  Surprise, surprise, she enjoyed it so much she immediately made a second one!!  She said these rolls were more like normal rolls and tasted really good as well.  She even asked her mother to go to Sainsbury’s to try and find more!!  Two branches of Sainsbury’s later she was successful in finding a packet of Promise Gluten Free Soft White Rolls.

Whilst writing this review I have just been informed that granddaughter has made herself two ham and cheese Paninis for lunch.  She insists the long bread rolls are Paninis whilst the white loaf makes Toasties!!

Promise Gluten Free White Loaf
Whilst her mother was tracking down more white rolls granddaughter was persuaded to try a toastie using the white loaf.  She said it was very nice, but preferred the rolls as she reckoned they had more taste.

Promise Gluten Free Brioche
Granddaughter said this is really good, it is very soft and tasty, very different from white bread of course, but great spread with Nutella for breakfast!  She tried it plain rather than toasted.

Promise Gluten Free Multi Seeded Rolls
Sorry, she flatly refused to try these as has never eaten seeded bread even in her pre coeliac days so her granddad offered to try these for her.  He made himself two cheese rolls for lunch.  He said the bread was very soft and tasty and he enjoyed them.  He went on to eat all six rolls we had been sent over the next few days!!’

None of the Promise bread, rolls or brioche fell apart when being made into a sandwich or toasted which was good.

It is a pity that Tesco & Aldi do not sell Promise products as that is where we do most of our shopping these days.  The closest large Sainsbury’s to us did not have any of the Promise Gluten Free Soft White Rolls, but the larger Dunstable Sainsbury’s did.  Disappointing though that the ‘best before’ date was only a few days away 17th May and daughter didn’t know if she would eat them if  frozen.

I think someone who loves a sandwich will really like the Promise Gluten Free Range as it appears to come close to ‘normal’ in both size and taste.  Unfortunately granddaughter has never been a fan of sandwiches, school lunches were always a problem even before diagnosis.  She had stopped eating gluten free bread over a year ago as could not find any she really enjoyed.

My granddaughter is very active and normally attends a college in London where she studies Musical Theatre.  At the moment all her classes are online in her own home.

I think now she has tried PROMISE gluten free products she will start eating ham and cheese Paninis and Toasties again.
