Booja-Booja Organic Truffles Review

Reviewed by Louise Totton
Trying to find delicious and luxurious treats at Christmas when you have food allergies and intolerances isn’t easy. Traipsing the ‘Free From’ section at the local supermarket seems to yield the same results year after year: lacklustre mince pies, digestive biscuits, the ubiquitous chocolate brownie and bland chocolate buttons. Nothing ‘special’, and not a great deal that is specifically aimed at the adult palette. Add in having multiple food allergies, or even being vegan, and your choices are diminished even further.
Well, I was a lucky girl recently when the lovely folks at Booja-Booja sent me a box of their award-winning dairy-free, gluten-free, soya-free and vegan chocolate truffles to try out. There aren’t many foods that successfully manage to omit all of these ingredients and remain tasty. Far fewer still manage to be downright delicious, decadent and utterly luxurious. Having said that, as they are overall winners of the Free From Food Awards 2019, I had high hopes of these ones.
The impression from the very beginning is one of luxury and treats. The packaging oozes quality, from the black background, gold-embossed trim and jewel-like accents to the foil covered tray containing sixteen delicious, cocoa dusted truffles. The flavours are very grown-up, and these are definitely not choccies for the kids’ stockings; the box contains:
- 5 x hazelnut crunch truffles
- 5 x almond salted caramel truffles
- 2 x stem ginger truffles
- 2 x rhubarb vanilla fool truffles
- 2 x around midnight espresso truffles
What can I say about the taste of these truffles? Well, about the best word I can come up with is WOW! These are absolutely stunning and I can certainly see why they have won the awards that they have! Containing all organic ingredients, everything listed on the back of the box is a recognisable foodstuff. There isn’t an E number or unpronounceable chemical in sight, and the ingredients list contains things like sea salt, organic ground coffee, vanilla extract and stem ginger – pure flavours, as food is meant to be!
These are a real treat, and you can absolutely taste the quality and the natural ingredients that they are made with. The stem ginger truffles have delicate little chunks of stem ginger nestled in the truffle, and the hazelnut crunch has plenty of little shards of hazelnut hidden in there. My favourites though are the rhubarb vanilla fools, which I wasn’t sure I would like when I read the back of the box! They are deliciously tangy, whilst still being slightly sweet and these flavours cut through the bitter dark chocolate truffle beautifully. Proper, organic ingredients don’t come cheap, so I think £9.99 for the box is a great price for a product of this standard, and just to add to their eco-credentials, their packaging is fully recyclable and the brand is earth-friendly and cruelty free.
These make a fantastic treat for anyone at Christmas, whether they have food allergies or not. They taste amazing and just ooze decadence and premium – the packaging makes them a superb gift and something that would be wonderful to unwrap.
