Living in Widnes, we have visited the sister trampoline park of the same name many times before in our home town and so jumped (no pun intended) at the chance of experiencing a different venue of the same brand about 25 minutes drive away.

Upon entering, I could tell the kids (age 9 and 11) were very impressed compared the Widnes one.

Velocity Wigan is located just off junction 25 of the M6 on a quiet industrial estate with ample parking. A few months old, this isn’t just any trampoline park – it is one of the biggest trampoline parks in Europe. Its size is colossal – 46,000 square feet of fitness fun comprising of trampolines, dodgeball courts, foam pits, crash mats, a gladiator beam, 4 party rooms (including one VIP room) and a Clip n Climb area, which on first glance this area looks like something out of a level of a Super Mario game.

We were greeted by a very smiley Managing Director, Steve Cosgrove who also owns the Widnes Velocity. He seemed a very hands-on and down to earth guy, chatting to the regular customers that frequent the park and answering the phones when the front of house staff were busy with customers.

To go on the trampolines, it’s £9 to jump for an hour (plus £2 for compulsory bright orange jump socks). You are given a coloured wristband and you must watch a safety video before jumping. You have to wait until the previous hour’s jumpers are off the equipment before the next lot are let on. There are spaces for 160 jumpers an hour. Health and Safety is paramount in a place like this and there is CCTV for everyone’s benefit. Only one jumper per trampoline and stay away from the edge of the trampoline.

Whilst the kids were enjoying themselves, I had a guided tour of the place with Kieron Marsh, General Manager who showed me a few of the party rooms all set up, including a VIP larger party room with special lighting. They do party packages ranging from £15 to £26 per child (the dearer price is for Clip n Climb too).

As well as there being a large café on the ground floor, upstairs was another café area which only opens when it’s busy. On the tables were menus offering a range of food and drink for all tastes at very reasonable prices. I had a latte and a skinny Americano, and they were both piping hot. I bought the kids 2 bubblegum and strawberry ice blasts which lasted them the whole 2 hours we were there.

My 11 year old daughter is a gymnast so absolutely loved the long trampoline area where she could run and do somersaults and back flips. As it wasn’t too busy at 5pm on a Saturday, she could hog a whole one to herself and no one minded.

The dodgeball courts:

My son particularly loved the gladiator style balance bar where he spent more time falling in the foam pit than he did on the bar! After jumping in the many areas on offer for an hour, they very excitedly ran over to the Clip n Climb area.

This is a unique experience and excellent value for money. To do both (trampoline and climbing) it is only £16.50, then you pay extra for the drop slide and leap of faith. Again all climbers must watch a safety video and then they wear harnesses on all the equipment. You can have a go on as many things as you want as many times as you can squeeze into an hour. There are around 12 different climbing experiences ranging from ice pick climbing to timed racing climbing.

The drop slide my son found quite difficult to hold onto the handle which drags you up to the top of the slide and so he kept letting go which meant he didn’t go very fast. However, my daughter managed to hold on until the very top so it all depends on the person. The instructors were very helpful and knowledgeable and aware of what was going on in each of the sections.

The only negatives I have about this fantastic indoor ‘Disneyland of the North’ is that the positioning of the lockers could be better. These were in the entrance before you get to the reception area. No good if you have kids and you are wanting to bounce with them and store your valuables – a few could be made available nearer to the trampolines. Also the toilets felt a little unfinished – no mirrors above the sinks, and the paint looked like it needed another coat.

Apart from this, we had an amazing time and will most definitely be back. Despite the distance, it is worth travelling that bit further to get a better bouncing experience.

Rating: 5/5 thumbs_up
