I was really looking forward to the opportunity to review the Little Tikes 5-in-1 Deluxe Ride and Relax (Recliner) Trike with my children aged 18 months and 3½ years.

The first thing that immediately impressed me was the size of the box it came in, it was really small and compact and well packaged, to the extent that when I first saw it I was concerned about what the quality would be like assuming they had compromised. The trike itself was relatively straightforward to build, I was annoyed at first as I thought no instruction manual had been included which resulted in me having to build it from instructions on my phone. Frustratingly I did eventually find the instruction manual tucked within the seat cover which is pretty much the last thing to go onto the trike so a strange place to put it really. That being said even with two young children ‘helping’ I managed to assemble it reasonably quickly, I liked the fact that tools were included to tighten the nuts and bolts and parts of the trike that are likely to be adjusted more frequently have hand screw nuts.

We have mainly tested this trike with my 18 month old but before we put the footrests on my 3½ year old used it as a trike. I thought this was a really nice feature; it was more than sturdy enough for a bigger child to ride on and has a weight limit of about 50lbs (22kg/3.5 stone). My son is on the smaller side so it was useful to be able to adjust the seat to help him reach the pedals. He had a great time and was really disappointed when we converted into the push along trike for his sister!

This trike comes with the usual features that you can expect from push along trikes, a sunshade, a parent steering handle and a small basket on the back which just about fits a small bag in it. Extra features which we really loved were the cup holder for the baby in the plastic area that keeps younger children secure, this was really helpful, a proper harness with shoulder straps and the generous sized footrests. The footrests in particular were the thing that most people complimented us on when we were out and about with it with many friends telling me they have had to stop using their push along trikes due to their young children dragging their feet on the floor.

Two things really caught my eye when I first found out I was reviewing this trike, the reclining seat and the parent tray on the handles. I have to say the reclining seat really makes this trike, I was dubious to see whether a child really could ‘nap’ on the bike, but when my daughter got tired on a long walk I reclined the seat and sure enough she drifted off and the shoulder straps helped keep her in place without slouching. I would recommend this trike to friends and family just on this feature alone! The parent tray however I was really disappointed in and not really sure what the point of it is – on the face of it, it looks like a brilliant feature handy to put a drink or a phone but the problem happens when you want to actually use the trike as soon as you turn to steer everything in the tray falls out.

We tested the trike on a walk and a trip round the local garden centre and found it handled both pavements and narrow aisles with ease, the breaks also came in handy. We also took it on a several long walks to the local park and found it went well on grass and graded paths a like, the steering was easy and it didn’t feel too heavy to push about. The trike looks very stylish and I loved the neutral grey and red colours on our version, which I think will work great when it converts to a trike later on.

The retail value of the trike is £109.99 and I would say it is more than worth it, it’s perfect for an older baby right up to a pre-schooler, its great quality and I can easily see it lasting a good few years and probably a couple of children.

I would have to rate 4.5 out of 5, only losing off full marks due to the poor design of the parent tray.
