Oh, how I do love going to the ‘Panto’. It’s such a family tradition since I was a little girl and really sets the Christmas season flying for me. So for me it was super to be able to share this tradition with my two girls (age 8 and 12 years).
Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs was fantastic, full of fun, laughter, lots of singing, dancing and lots of audience participation right from the very start. The show started with a very short film explaining about the tradition of ‘pantos’ and how we in the UK are the only country who have ‘pantos’, oh what is everyone else missing, this was really quite informative.
The show runs for approximately 2½ hours, including an interval, but it passed so quickly and I loved watching my two girls being totally enthralled and laughing along. The story itself was told just as I remember Snow White to be but with the traditional twists and modern jokes and songs.
The wicked stepmother was played brilliantly by the very talented Juliet Cadzow – famous to both my girls as Eadie McCreadie from Balamory, she was superb and truly captured the essence of the characters meaness and wickedness bringing lots of ‘Boos’ from all of us in the audience.
And of course my favourite character, famous for his role in Rab C Nesbitt, Gregor Fisher as Hector the Henchman – he brought real humour and laughter to his character and although he was to do no good by the orders of the wicked stepmother, we all loved him and knew he would help save beautiful Snow White in the end … Typical toilet humour was loved by the children, you could hear them giggling away! Snow White and her handsome prince brought charisma and charm to the panto – enthralling us with modern songs and dancing – two people I hadn’t come across before but both playing their characters brilliantly, I loved the fact they used current chart songs to bring a modern twist to the story – and of course Muddles played by Des Clarke – a real comedian and playing a bumbling character and bringing Muddles to life with lots of laughter – girls loved the sing along bit at the end where everyone was up singing and dancing.
My two girls just loved all seven dwarfs and were excited to learn some of them had been in the Harry Potter films! They brought real character to the panto with all their antics.
The costumes and stage sets were bright bold and glittery, exactly how it should be. The whole production was magical, charming and we all absolutely loved it, and being in Glasgow there was quite a bit of ‘Glasgow’ humour which sometimes I didn’t quite understand but it didn’t stop me being taken along on a fantastic panto ride! Would I go again…. ‘Oh yes I will’ brilliant fun for all the family.
The King’s Theatre in Glasgow is a quick five minute walk from the nearest train station so easily reached. A gorgeous traditional theatre and made even more exciting for us as we were in a box, a real childhood dream of mine at last fulfilled with my two girls.
We would highly recommend seeing this fantastic fun filled panto.
