Shrek the Musical opened on Tuesday night at the Edinburgh Playhouse where it runs until the 8th November.

I attended the show last night with my 9 year old son and we laughed from start to end. It certainly isn’t for those who are offended by toilet humour but the kids loved it! There is also has an undercurrent of adult humour! The show is recommended for age 5 plus and really is a great introduction to the delights of musical theatre for children. Take note, the show starts slightly earlier than normal at 7pm which also makes it family friendlier.

Many well-known storybook characters such as the Three Little Pigs, Peter Pan, the Big Bad Wolf, Pinocchio and the Three Bears are banished from Duloc by Lord Farquaad to the swamp where Shrek lives. Shrek reaches a deal with the Lord to reclaim his swamp in return for finding Princess Fiona so they can marry and Farquaad can become king.

The show follows the tale of Shrek played by Dean Chisnall with his fine Scottish accent, as he journeys to rescue Princess Fiona (Bronte Barbe) with the help of Donkey (Idriss Kargbo). There is fantastic chemistry between Shrek and Donkey as they negotiate their unlikely friendship. The pint sized Lord Farquaad (Gerard Carey) is hilarious too.

The cast dance their heart out in fabulously choreographed dance routines, the costumes are also amazing… the Three Little Pigs were our favourite! There are many well-known songs that you can’t help singing along to, especially the finale… I’m a Believer.

Edinburgh Playhouse is located at the east end of Princess Street on Greenside Place. It is a short walk from Waverley Train Station. The theatre is comfortable and beautifully ornate. The Boards is a great location for pre or post theatre drinks.
