On Wednesday 16 September me and my friend Emma got to go and watch the theatre production of Annie at the Opera House in Manchester, which is directed by Nikolai Foster. I have to say I was really looking forward to it as I’d never seen it live on stage before but I loved the film from being a child myself. After arriving at the theatre 5 minutes before starting time due to parking problems, which I suppose is to be expected for the centre of town, to say the least I was sweating a bit! When walking into the Opera House we were met by very welcoming staff to direct us to the press desk which was clearly sign posted. After picking our tickets up we made our way to our seats in the stalls. As soon as we entered the theatre the jigsaw backdrop just stood out, what great imagination and art work.
Annie is the story of a young orphan living in an orphanage in 1930’s America with the dreadful Miss Hannigan. She wants to find her parents and when a billionaire selects her to spend a week at his house her luck changes and she sets off on her quest to find them, but Miss Hannigan has other ideas!
The show kicked off to a very energetic orphan bedroom scene and I have to say the children were just amazing from there singing right the way through to the passion of acting they hold! The show from start to end was just full of energy, excitement and humour too. The connection between the performers was so good they just pulled you into the story. I never thought it would have been as good as the film but I was proven wrong! I was amazed by the hard work everyone must have put into this production even Amber (Sandy) the dog was just effortless. The main stars are Madeleine Haynes (Annie), Alex Bourne (Daddy Warbucks), Craig Revel Horwood (Miss Hannigan) and many many more. This was one show I can’t say a bad word about! From the venue to the quality of vocal performance, costumes, visuals and onstage relentless energy and passionate effort to the overall retell of the story Annie.
A fabulous evening out.
