The Illustrated Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot Review

Reviewed by Linda Curtain
Jellicle Cats come out tonight, Jellicles come to the Jellicle Ball – I’m sure these lines are very familiar to many readers so I was delighted to receive the wonderful book ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’ to review. As a cat lover, a musical theatre lover and an avid reader, I could think of no book more suitable for me!
This collection of well-known poems – which were originally written by T. S. Eliot for his godchildren – were first written in 1939 and are continuing to delight readers today. It is so lovely to see the book reprinted but still using the beautiful original Old Possum’s illustrations so cleverly drawn by Nicolas Bentley.
With such a timeless book, who can fail to be enthralled by the well-known feline characters such as Mr Mistoffelees, Macavity, Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer. I am sure all cat owners will recognise some of the traits in their own feline friends – I’m still not sure if mine is like Macavity the mystery cat or the notorious Rumpelteazer!! Old Deuteronomy certainly reminded me of an old cat I used to have.
The poems within this book were famously used as the basis for the fantastic stage musical ‘Cats’. You definitely find yourself singing along to the words as you read the poems. In addition to the more familiar poems it was great to be able to read some less known ones.
The book itself is a lovely size to hold and read with ease. It is a hardback book with a lovely colourful cover illustrated with an enchanting pair of dancing cats on their way to that Jellicle Ball.
A beautiful, whimsical book which is full of fun and adventure. Readers of all ages will love these poems – either as a reminder of their childhood books or as part of a new generation who can enjoy the feline characters.
A must-have book for all cat lovers. This reprinted edition is certainly a great buy for all the family.
