A meal out is a treat that I really look forward to, so I was wary of what to expect from a chain venue. Mill Lodge is a Table Table restaurant just outside Lincoln city centre. It was easy to find, situated on a busy junction, and had ample parking including disabled bays for use by customers of itself and the next door hotel. The building is smart and modern, with a nice garden area. Inside I was pleased to find the décor matched the exterior – smart and contemporary without being cold and unwelcoming, there were even real fires to warm us up on a cold February day. The restaurant was very busy (always a good sign!), but there were plenty of servers so that did not seem to be an issue.

We were greeted with a smile and shown to our table, complete with comfy chairs. Our server, Michael, brought a highchair for my son (which I was pleased to see was very clean), and we were left to peruse the menu. This was fairly standard for this type of restaurant, featuring all the pub favourites, and a Sunday lunch was also on offer.  A children’s menu is available which is also quite standard – fish fingers and spaghetti for example – although smaller portions of some adult meals were offered, which I thought was a nice option for slightly older children. The drinks menu is quite extensive, even featuring cocktails – we chose a glass of the Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc which was truly delicious – a joy considering I was expecting only basic offerings of wine.

Our order was promptly taken and our starter arrived very quickly – garlic mushrooms with garlic mayonnaise. They were presented well and were piping hot. Our mains also arrived quickly – steak and ale pie and a lamb rump. The pie looked and smelt fantastic and I was assured that the taste was just as good; the lamb rump was tender and cooked just as I had asked, served with potatoes and seasonal vegetables and the most fantastic sauce. It is safe to say that I did not expect the meal to be quite at the standard that it was for the price. We could not leave without ordering dessert after seeing some of the sundaes being carried past, and these also arrived presented well and in good time – a chocolate berry sundae (very indulgent!) and a caramel apple crumble with ice cream (highly recommended!). We were offered coffee, which I was surprised to find was Costa, but by this point we were too full to think of eating or drinking anything else.

When presented with the bill (at a very sensible price I might add), we were informed that by completing the online survey we could claim a free bottle of wine on our next visit. It might not be a gastro pub, but following a very pleasant meal with sparkling service, it’s safe to say that there is a bottle waiting with our name on it.
