Having been a fan of the film back in the nineties I was looking forward to seeing the production of Sister Act by TWODS (Tunbridge Wells Operatic & Dramatic Society) so after arriving at Tunbridge Wells Assembly Hall, parking easily and cheaply next door, I picked up the tickets from the courteous staff and found my seat in the stalls. There was a real feeling of anticipation in the packed Assembly Hall and as a very humorous Catholic Priest came on stage to explain why mobile phones shouldn’t be used doing the show, as they weren’t invented in 1992, you could tell that we were going to be in for a fun evening.
The shows tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a small time singer, whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses her married lover kill someone. The police hide her in a convent, the last place anyone would think to look. The policeman has a serious crush on Deloris and you have to wait to find out what happens between them but rest assured it is a happy ending. In the meantime he does everything he can to keep her safe including persuading Mother Superior to keep her in the Convent when she sneaks out to a local bar!
To keep Deloris out of trouble Mother Superior tasks her to train the very out of tune choir with hilarious consequences. Unfortunately this ends in them becoming so famous that they are seen on TV by the very man that she is hiding from. The Sisters stick together and beat the bad guys in an extremely fun and entertaining way.
The show really is excellent, singing superb and the cast play their parts brilliantly, especially the cranky old nun! An incredibly entertaining evening was certainly had by me and my mother and by the amount of laughter around the theatre I’m 100 percent sure the rest of the audience loved it too.
Tunbridge Wells Assembly Hall has great acoustics for this kind of show, excellent access for the less mobile and a well-stocked bar with delicious ice cream which makes it a really pleasant theatre to visit. That combined with parking being only £1.00 per night makes any show here a pleasure.
Sister Act was one of the most entertaining shows I have seen for a long time and I would not hesitate to recommend it. It’s running all week so try and get tickets if you can, you will have a ball.
Tickets cost from £14 to £18 (booking fees may apply).
