Last night we visited the King’s Theatre in Glasgow to see the stage adaptation of the classic novel.

Set in a small farming community in North East of Scotland it is a story of how when World War I breaks out widowed Chris Guthrie must adapt to her new life and keep her family together.

Powerful and hard hitting from the start, the small yet perfectly formed cast of Sunset Song pull you straight  in to their lives from the moment the curtain is up till the last note plays on the bagpipes. A gripping story of love and loss, hope and despair in one of the bleakest times in history.

Sell A Door Theatre Company have taken Alastair Cordings’ adaption and brought the community of Kinnradie alive once more to mark 100 years since the start of the First World War. The scenes depicting a trudge through the fields and trenches are particularly poignant.

The performances by the actors were superb and their accents were perfect. The staging was minimalist but this fitted in well with the story, and the setting of the King’s was perfect for this production.

Highly recommended for lovers of the book recently voted Scotland’s favourite novel, but equally compelling for those new to the story.

Rating: 5/5 thumbs_up
