My son is really in to rocks and crystals and I knew that he would really enjoy the idea of making his own.
The box suggests that the product is suitable for children aged 8 and above, and I think this is spot on. My son is 8, and needed quite a bit of support. It is very clear from the outside of the box that this product could be dangerous. There are clear warnings and cautions visible, and the leaflets inside continue to give this message.
He was extremely excited to get started and we opened the box to investigate the contents. The kit has everything you need inside, with the exception of a cup. We found the instructions clear and easy to follow. There are written instructions with pictures alongside so less able readers can still participate.
We followed the steps to the letter. My son was impatient when we had to wait between stages, but it was good for him to learn the process involved in creating his crystal. Overall it took about three days to have something that resembled a crystal!
The crystal growing kits comes with a plastic display case, which he will use to display his finished crystal. He has already asked if he can take it in to school for ‘show and tell’ and has been keen to tell people he has made his own crystal!
As a teacher, I would have liked a little bit more information on the actual ‘science’ involved as I’m not exactly sure ‘how’ it worked and had to try and answer some difficult questions!
I would definitely buy another kit that made a different type of crystal as it was great to do something creative like this with my son.
