Sunday Afternoons was founded in Oregon USA in the 1980s by an outdoor loving family. The business started with selling portable blankets for use on beaches and picnics and then diversified into hats, which is now their core business with a huge range of different hats available to buy on the website for all kinds of outdoor activities. There are hats for adults and children. Sunday Afternoons strive to make their hats durable, sustainable and socially responsible, and are certified climate neutral.

I was delighted to be asked to review the Clear Creek Boonie Hat, which is a lightweight reversible hat ideal for wearing during hikes or rambles, or for other casual occasions. The Clear Creek Boonie comes in five different colour ways, I chose “blue meadow” which has a blue toned floral design on one side and plain blue on the other side. The other colours are plain designs.

The hat arrived quickly after I ordered it and came in a cardboard box with no other packaging, so this was great as the box can be recycled or re-used.

I was immediately impressed with the quality of the hat, it is lightweight (87.9 grams) and the material feels really nice (it’s made of nylon/polyester mix). The floral pattern is very pretty with blues and beige colours and a navy band, the inner blue is also a nice colour however I think I am most likely to wear the floral side more. The hat is reversible, to do this the care label, which is lightly stitched in, has to be removed.

The Clear Creek Boonie has a UPF50+ sun protection rating and a wide brim to provide shade and protection, which is so important when out and about in the sun, especially with the increasing risks of skin cancer in the UK. I always take a hat on holiday with me.

There is a removable and adjustable chin strap which is a great idea. The strap easily attaches through fabric loops. It also has a toggle for tightening and loosening that hat for a secure fit.

The Clear Creek Boonie only comes in medium size which fits a head circumference of 56-58cm and fits me really well, which is great as I usually struggle to find hats that fit as my head must be larger than average. The hat also has adjustable sizing through a toggle strap, so can be made tighter if needed which is a great feature.

Aside from everything already mentioned, the best feature of the Clear Creak Boonie for me is that it’s crushable and can be packed completely flat. This is exactly what I need in a hat as it can easily be stuffed into a bag along with other things. For ages I’ve been telling my family I need to buy a hat that I can put in my bag or suitcase, as I’m usually struggling with unwieldy rigid sun hats when we go on holiday, and have also lost a couple on the way from putting them down and forgetting about them!

I would highly recommend the Sunday Afternoons Clear Creek Boonie, at £42.95 it is fairly expensive however it is amazing quality with a number of different features to make it very practical. It also looks good. It can be ordered from the Sunday Afternoons website and there is free delivery over £30.
