I’ve been looking for a pair of boots I like for quite a few years now. Previous wellies have not lasted well with light use, or have been impossible to get a comfortable fit. I only really need them for rainy day walks with my toddler, who loves puddles, and the occasional muddy path so an ankle boot is perfect. The Shoreline 4.0 boots are part of Grubs “premium Superlite boots, designed for superior comfort and protection”.
The Grubs Shoreline 4.0 boot is waterproof, insulated and is made for all day comfort. They have a lining that wicks moisture away from the feet and that is fungus and rot proof so I’m expecting that these will not become stinky like some other wellies have done in the past. They are rated for comfort from minus twenty to plus twenty Celsius temperatures so are well suited to most weather conditions the English weather may throw at them and the outsole is described as providing a superior grip on many surfaces.
When they arrived I was surprised at how light the package was. So light that I thought it was something else until I opened the mailing bag and saw the Grubs box! I struggled to get one foot in while thinking I would have to invest in a shoehorn for help. Then inside I found a very useful little loop of material to put my finger in and that helped get the heel in and the boots on properly. There is a useful little lip on the heel which is perfectly useful to aid taking them off too.
I then took them for a short walk to the shop. We had been having a sunny dry spell so there were no puddles to test them in that day. They felt a little strange at first but I soon got used to them and did indeed find them comfortable to walk in. We have since had one very wet day so I headed out to a local area where I knew there would be some good puddles to splash through. They have a lovely wide toe box leaving my toes plenty of room so I am confident there will be no blisters from toe rubbing. The upper and ankle of the boot is soft and quite flexible so it didn’t bother me at all to wear them for quite a few hours. My feet stayed warm, dry and comfortable whilst wearing these boots.
I don’t usually drive in welly boots, they’re too bulky and don’t give enough control of the pedals for me to consider it safe. However I put these Grubbs boots on to catch the cat in the garden one morning and forgot to switch shoes before I went out in the car. I didn’t realise I still had them on until I got out of the car having had no problems driving in them.
Also inside the box was a little tag that said “please look after me” on one side and “brush me! wash me! oil me! often!” on the other side. Wellies get muddy and a soft bristle brush is the easiest way to get dried mud of, with the assistance of water when needed but I’ve never dreamed about oiling wellies before so off I went to the website given on the tag to find out what this meant. I didn’t manage to find what I was looking for there though. The FAQ gave instructions for cleaning with water and a soft brush for stubborn dirt but oiling was not mentioned. https://grubsboot.com/faq. They do sell a “rubber boot saver” in the accessories section so I assume this does the job.
I really like these boots, they’re comfortable to wear walking around for a few hours, they don’t seem to need any breaking in. They’re not too warm in England’s spring weather but should be warm enough in the coldest winter too. I love that they come in a couple of colours rather than just plain black. I chose the mauve. The 100% waterproofness means I no longer have to try and find a dry path around puddles and I’m looking forward to having dry feet on winter wet walks.
