The packaging made a great first impression. Upon opening the parcel, my item was in a Secrid paper bag with the slogan “Ethically made, designed to last.” In the packaging, I found a leaflet detailing the other wallets available from Secrid. There was an array of different style wallets made from different materials. My wallet was beautifully packaged in a recyclable, high‑quality Secrid branded box that was wrapped neatly in white tissue paper, secured by a Secrid sticker. As a consumer, it really looked like a lot of love and care went into getting my wallet to me. Within the box, I was also sent a separate coin pouch, but it didn’t really work with this type of wallet, so it felt like a bit of a wasted inclusion. In comparison to the quality of the Cardprotector, it felt somewhat lacking, but I would have liked to have seen it working with one of the other wallets.
According to their website, Secrid have been making wallets in the Netherlands since 1995, and they pride themselves on their quality, social responsibility, and the fact that they are carbon compensated. What started as a side project soon became their full‑time focus, and in 2009 the Cardprotector was launched.
The Cardprotector is tiny, compact and very strong. It holds up to 6 unembossed cards and up to 4 embossed cards. At the bottom of the Cardprotector, a little lever, when pulled, pushes the cards up and out of the wallet. It displays them nicely with the cards staggered. It’s great, as it enables you to find your card easily and remove it to pay.
Being small, the wallet also packs in a surprising amount of storage. The flexible ‘powernet sleeve’ gives space for holding notes, tickets, some coins or a key. The whole thing slots into my pocket so easily, and I have everything in one place. My cards and items feel so secure. The ‘powernet sleeve’ can also hold up to 4 additional cards, so if I need to hold more than 4–6 cards, it gives me the possibility to. My one concern was that the Cardprotector is so sturdy, but I was worried about what would happen if I caught the lever and snapped it. It’s a very sturdy wallet that’s been around and improved over the years, so I would put my faith in it.
Speaking of secure, the wallet is RFID protected (Radio Frequency Identification Protection). This essentially means that my cards are safe from skimming machines or accidental taps, and the materials used in the wallet are designed to keep my cards and my money safe.
One of the key features that I love about this Cardprotector is that it fits into small jean pockets, as it’s so slim, but it’s so much more secure than a loose card in your pocket on a night out.
I had the Teal wallet, but this is also available in Orange, Black, Kelp (like an olive green) and Mauve. There are other Cardprotectors available (without the powernet wrap) in more colours, but I really did reap the benefit of having the wrap for coins and notes, as it kept everything together. The sleeve is designed so that it can be stretched but will snap back and maintain its shape. I really gave the wrap a good pull and was pleasantly surprised.
Overall, the Secrid Flexwallet is a great item. My cards and small items are now safely tucked away in this fun, funky wallet, safe from being dropped and skimmed. I did find that the price was higher than I would normally pay for a wallet, but I’ve never owned a wallet of this type.
