As a huge fan of Dancing on Ice I was thrilled to be invited to see ICE at The Lowry in Manchester that head judge and famous figure skater Robin Cousins directs and choreographs.

The feel of the cold air rising from the stage that had been transformed into a ice rink, the sound of the skates as they glide across the ice and the splinters that fly from the rink and sparkle in the light all add to the atmosphere of a truly spectacular night.

The cast of 14 world-class skaters have been hand-picked from across the globe by the man himself. The line between skating and dancing is blurred and sometimes I forgot for a second that they were actually on skates whilst producing an impressive array of ballet, athletics, singing, acrobatics, circus stunts and even magic! There are solo performances, duets and ensembles and the show is fast paced and keeps your attention throughout. Although they are all brilliant skaters and entertainers, stand out performances for me were the exceptionally talented Brandee Matto a little Californian firecracker who could brighten up the dullest room. When she smiles you find yourself doing the same! Michael Solonoski skates a complicated routine while also singing, yes singing! Lost Love. His voice is beautiful and smooth throughout, I don’t know how he manages it. Vaughn Chipeur also deserves a special mention he has speed and acrobatic skills that are mesmerising and his cheeky winks and waves add to his appeal. Aerialist Kate Endriulaitis brings the circus element dangling from a loop above the stage twisting turning and hanging on by every part of her body. How she does it and stays on I’ll never know.

The famous headbanger is performed at great physical risk. My heart was in my mouth as it was throughout the night on many occasions as we were treated to a night to remember. High heeled skates are used too at one point which was very bizarre.

The soundtrack is a mixture of old, new and reworked numbers, I particularly enjoyed the bridge Over Troubled Waters scene and Lady GaGa’s reworked Bad Romance.

It is a non-narrative show with a static set. The stage uses back lighting colour and shadow change to enhance the mood. My only small negatives are the costumes were a little disappointing, I expected them to be more flamboyant, and the music, to me, sounded slightly amateur.

We loved every minute and it showcases just how much strength and ability these performers have.

As ice/dancing is growing in popularity I think ICE is going to be a hit everywhere it is performed on its national tour.
