“You’re in my heart, you’re in my soul…”
Not the story of Rod Stewart, instead the story of a love triangle between the transformed Stuart, Mary, Rocky and Dee Dee. It’s a predictable storyline, laced with pretty much every one of Rod Stewart’s hits.
Ben Elton’s writing, surprisingly, let’s down the whole production. The plot is so thin it might as well not be there, you look forward to each song just to be able to keep up with what’s going on.
This evening’s performance had Rosie Heath playing the part of Dee Dee, but her performance was brilliant. The main stars Ben Heathcote (Stuart) and Jenna Lee-James (Mary) show off their West End breeding with impeccable performances. Tiffany Graves is far too convincing as a Texan tour manager. She is one of the rising stats to watch out for!
Michael McKell (Stoner) comes into his own in the second half with some very naughty lines, and manages to stay in character throughout. I’ll never think of lettuce and soufflés in the same way again. 😉
The only ask of this show is the hair and costumes. Too many times, it looks like someone’s raided the dressing up box. It would have been nice to see more Scottish themes throughout instead of at the end.
The finale was the best part of the show by far. Renditions of Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? and Sailing (complete with sailors hats for the whole audience!) got the crowd on their feet and singing too.
A good evening for rock and roll lovers who want a laugh.
