Come one, come all! The circus has rolled into town and gee-whizz what an extraordinary event! This afternoon, my family and I attended the spectacular ‘Cirque – The Greatest Show’ at Leicester’s Curve Theatre. Continuing its epic 100-date UK tour, this unique musical/circus hybrid combines the best of Hollywood and West End musicals, with a mesmerising range of circus performances in a brand-new production. Brought to the stage by the renowned family-run ‘Entertainers’, this immersive show is a wondrous journey for the whole family.

The story begins in the monochromatic world of a charming mime (Christian Lee). Full of humour and glee, over the course of two glorious hours, he transported us back in time to a golden age of breath taking pizazz which literally burst forth from his new colour television…

Opening the big top, the titular song of ‘Cirque’ immediately captivated the audience, drawing us into a world of excitement. The high-energy anthem was sung with powerful aplomb by vocalists Max Fox, Robbie Waugh, Wesley Bromley, Tori Murray, Nikita Coulon and Jamie Long. These voices combined with stunning sequences set the standard with feats of circus artistry and dance. Each act that followed was a testament to the performers’ incredible skill and versatility. A high-bar which was consistently raised as the spectacle unfolded before wide-eyes!

Steve and Georgia of Duo Eclipse fame delivered a breath taking roller-skating routine that dazzled the audience with its speed, precision, and elegance. Their synchronized movements and intricate spins showcased impeccable balance. The duo performed daring lifts and rapid footwork, creating a seamless blend of athleticism and invention. Their undeniable chemistry and trust made their performance unforgettable.

Aerial acts performed by Jennifer Van Gool, Dionne Hall, and Shonagh Leatherbarrow were spellbinding. Their graceful movements and breath taking acrobatics showcased extraordinary strength and poise. Suspended high above the stage, they performed intricate routines with effortless elegance and synchronisation. Each twist, turn, and drop was executed flawlessly, creating a mesmerizing visual spectacle. Their aerial artistry left us in awe, highlighting the beauty and thrill of their craft.

Every second on stage, the dancers entranced the audience with their energetic routines set to a range of rousing musical numbers. Their performances were a vibrant blend of contemporary and classical styles, each routine perfectly synchronized with the music’s rhythm and energy. Their enthusiasm and skilful execution left the audience enthralled, adding an exhilarating dimension to the show.

Award-winning Christian Lee’s magical-mime and humorous audience-involved skits peppered between the acts – replacing our gasps of astonishment with rumbling laughter. As his story continued, before we knew it the curtain had fallen on the first half.

The twenty-minute intermission was too long! We were jubilant to return to the big top, assured that the continuing extravaganza would not disappoint. And hot diggity, how right we were as the entertainment and thrills reached all new heights.

Adam Boom’s fire act was a mesmerizing display of skill and daring. His mastery over the flames was evident as he performed intricate routines with fiery batons, creating stunning patterns of light and heat. The intensity and precision blended danger and beauty in an unforgettable way. Each moment was thrilling, keeping us on the edge of their seats, marvelling at the spectacle of fire and finesse.

Thomas Barrandon and partner’s crossbow act was a stunning demonstration of nerve. Their ability to hit bullseyes, and slice through targets, with pinpoint accuracy left the audience breathless. Each shot was delivered with unwavering confidence, showcasing his exceptional skill and steady hand. The tension in the air was palpable as he performed increasingly difficult feats, culminating in a heart-stopping finale that highlighted his remarkable talent and showmanship.

This show abounded with inspirational and talented individuals, so apologies if every phenomenal person didn’t get a namecheck. It would be a very long review otherwise!

A very special mention to those working behind the scenes to create the razzmatazz: the costumes dazzled as much as the choreography; lighting, sound, visual and pyrotechnic effects were in step with every performance; and all combined perfectly with the slick staging and props to create moments of marvel.

With the audience up on their feet, clapping and singing along, the entire company joined the stage for the finale. The incredibly talented troop very much deserved the standing ovation, and we were left wanting more!

Roll up! Roll up! For an unrivalled assemblage of international talent to thrill and enthral the whole family, I can recommend no better wonderment than ‘Cirque – The Greatest Show’! An astounding and sensational afternoon!

The modern Curve Theatre stands within a clean, well-lit, and popular cultural quarter of the city. The purpose-built venue is perfectly suited for all production types and quite unique; with no typical backstage area, you may find cast and crew mingling with you! The Theatre is surrounded by a range of bars, restaurants, and entertainment options for a great night out in the bustling city. Arriving by car, routes to the theatre were well signposted and nearby parking was plentiful. Other transport links are nearby. The Highcross and Haymarket shopping centres are a short walk away.

The single-level main foyer is relaxed and spacious, leading to all accessible levels. We were greeted warmly on entering and felt a buzz in the air. We found the bars/concession stands to be well manned, stocked with a wide range of hot/cold drinks and treats, all standard prices for theatres. Both stall and circle seats are very comfortable and provide excellent views of the stage.
