Derby Theatre, Octagon Theatre Bolton, and Hull Truck Theatre’s rendition of George Orwell’s timeless classic, “Animal Farm,” delivers a thought-provoking theatrical experience that entertains audiences from start to finish. Directed with precision and creativity by Iqnbal Khan, this adaptation, written by Ian Wooldridge, masterfully brings Orwell’s allegorical tale to life on stage, seamlessly blending elements of drama, satire, and political commentary.

Set against the backdrop of a farmyard revolution, the play follows the journey of the animals of Manor Farm as they overthrow their oppressive human master, Mr. Jones, and establish their society based on the principles of equality and freedom. However, the pigs, led by the cunning Napoleon – the ambitious and manipulative pig, has a commanding presence, embodying the allure of power and the dangers of unchecked ambition. (played by Ida Regan) and his sidekick Squealer (played by Killian Macardle), assumes control, the utopian vision of Animalism begins to unravel, revealing the corrupting influence of power and the inherent flaws in human nature. Samater Ahmed shines as the idealistic and naive Snowball, whose unwavering belief in the principles of Animalism ultimately leads to his downfall.

The cast play a number of different characters as one dies or is outcast and another is introduced. Ahmed also plays Benjamin the donkey who represents intelligent people who dont speak out – very thought provoking stuff. Sam Black is excellent as Boxer the carthourse and Polly Lister brilliant as Old Major (who gives the rest of the farm the warning) and Clover, a lady cardhorse. I loved Amy Drake as Mollie, the vain and pretty mare who leaves for a more attractive lifestyle and then returns as Moses, the raven.

The production design. led by Chris Whitwood, is innovative. The use of set pieces, lighting, and sound design effectively transports the audience into the heart of the farm, immersing them in the tumultuous world of the animals. The rules are displayed in the foreground, and frequently amended to suit the pig’’s agenda, serving as a visual metaphor for the themes explored in the play.

One of the play’s greatest strengths is its ability to provoke thought and spark discussion. Through its symbolic narrative, “Animal Farm” holds a mirror to society, inviting audiences to reflect on the nature of power, propaganda, and the manipulation of truth. The parallels to real-world political events are impossible to ignore, making the play as relevant today as it was when it was first published over 75 years ago.

At its core, “Animal Farm” is a cautionary tale about the dangers of totalitarianism and the importance of remaining vigilant in the face of oppression. This adaptation does justice to Orwell’s powerful message, delivering a production that is both entertaining and intellectually stimulating. Whether you’re a fan of the original novel or new to Orwell’s work, this play is not to be missed.
