In the 23 years of performances, Stomp has collected plaudits from all quarters and the latest performance in Sheffield will only enhance their reputation. The non-stop 100 minute performance (yes, no toilet break) was varied, funny and fantastically energetic. I was exhausted by proxy. You can catch many excerpts of their routines on YouTube but, good though these are, they do not do justice to the verve, noise and energy of the performance.
They demonstrated a creative genius by making music on plastic bags, newspapers, tin cans, zippo lighters, paper cups, matchboxes, all sorts of odds and ends and even a banana skin. All the percussion was accompanied by dance, gymnastics and juggling routines that seemed effortlessly slick.
The age of the audience ranged from about 7 to 70, and all were immediately engaged. By the end of the show our hands ached through applause and participation. Each one of the cast played an individual character part, the thread of gentle humour running through every routine was led by three of the troop, who like characters in a pantomime lead the audience into their act.
The intricately designed stage set and the excellent lighting added to the excitement and impact of individual highlights and group choreography, all close to the audience in the comfortable and welcoming Lyceum.
There were few empty seats on this Tuesday night and I suspect there will be few remaining for the rest of the week, but if you can get one do, it will make a very memorable experience, lighting up a drab November day.
