Aldi Baby Care Review

Reviewed by Sarah Bowyer

I was so happy to have been chosen to review the Aldi Mamia range. I use Aldi for my food shopping, but hadn’t tried the Mamia items. Every time I went to Aldi I just used to walk past the baby section. Even before my son was born I always said I only wanted to use the ‘best’ branded toiletries and nappies. Only because I thought that these products would be far superior to any of the cheaper, unbranded items available.

MamiaNappiesMamia Nappies £4.29
The nappies I got are in size 4 and there are 44 in the pack. For the price I think that these nappies are a very reasonable buy. For a long time I had been paying much more for a very similar product.

Once I had opened the pack and pulled out a nappy I could instantly feel how soft and flexible they were. They don’t have that rustle that you sometimes find with some of the cheaper unbranded nappies. The design on the nappy is a lovely print of animals with a larger elephant on the waist band. On the front of the nappy the elephant is facing you and on the back of the nappy the elephant has his back to you. This really appealed to my sense of humour.

The resealer fastener tapes are really stretchy and wide which I found really handy. Since trying to get a nappy on a wriggly 11 month old is virtually impossible the wider tabs meant I could just quickly close the nappy without having readjust the straps which I regularly had to do on the higher end nappies that I used to buy. The wider resealer fastener tapes also means that the nappy doesn’t roll down as much as other brands can.

On the packaging it states that these nappies have leak protection of ‘up to 12 hours’. For the first nights use I was expecting to wake up to a wet baby, but I didn’t. And actually he slept for more than 12 hours. I was genuinely impressed. There have been a few occasions in the past where branded nappies have leaked.

Having always tended to go for the higher range nappies, only because I thought that they were the best, I realise I was wrong in my thinking. I am now officially a convert to these nappies. They are brilliant.

I was really was dubious about trying these nappies. I thought that they would probably leak the first night my son wore them or the quality would be poor, but they didn’t and they’re not.

I definitely give these nappies a 5 out of 5. They are absorbent, easy to put on and my son seems comfortable in them, which I think is the most important thing.

MamiaBabyWipesBaby Wipes £0.59
When I picked up these baby wipes I couldn’t believe that they were only 59p a pack (pack contains 64 wipes). That makes them less than 1p per wipe. My first impression was that they were going to be cheap and thinner than wet toilet roll.

As soon as I pulled a wipe from the packet I could feel the quality. They are thick and a little bit stretchy which is handy because this stops them tearing as you pull them out. In addition these wipes come out one by one, not as a huge long roll of baby wipe that you have to battle with one hand to try and separate.

A brilliant feature of the packet of wipes is the click shut lid. This is so much better than the plastic peel back lids you find on some other brands of wipes. It means that the wipes stay wet and you don’t get the contents of your changing bag stuck to it.

I chose the Mamia fragrance free sensitive wipes with aloe vera and chamomile because I have found that my son’s skin can get a little bit irritated by other brands that are perfumed. However they do have a slight scent to them, but it is delicate and fresh and leaves a lovely clean smell on the skin.

I have used them constantly for a week now and my sons skin is as soft as ever. He hasn’t had any reaction at all. In fact I think the aloe vera and chamomile have helped to keep him moisturised.

These wipes cost a lot less than the branded wipes I had been previously using and I feel that they are of equal quality. Everything from the click shut lid to the subtle scent that they have I find is brilliant. I am definitely going to carry on using these wipes. If the truth be known I have actually started a little stock pile I like them so much. 5 out of 5 for these. Brilliant!

Biscotti Biscuits and Apple Rice Cakes
The Biscotti biscuits come in a box of 32 biscuits that are separated into 4 foiled packs each containing 8 biscuits. This helps to keep the biscuits fresh. Being individually wrapped makes it handy to be able to just grab them and throw them into my changing bag for when I am out and about.

The box itself is bright yellow with a cute bear holding a balloon. It’s nice and eye catching.

On the side of the box there are instructions on ways you can use the biscuits. Such as, from 6 months on it suggests crumbling 2-3 biscuits into a bowl and adding a little bit of milk. From 7 months on it suggests letting babies nibble on the biscuits.

I gave these to my son as a biscuit snack in between meals.

The Biscotti biscuits are a firm, light finger shaped biscuit. They taste like a rich tea biscuit crossed with a rusk. They are very sweet which is probably why my son loves them so much.

Once I became a mum I also became a salt and sugar fiend, checking all the food I give to my son. Each biscuit is 24 calories and contains 0.2g salt and 1.2g sugar. They also have no added colouring agents or preservatives.

I feel that they are very sweet and the sugar content is quite high for one biscuit. Therefore they are not something I will be giving to my son regularly, but as a treat will be fine.

These biscuits melt in the mouth rather than crumble which makes them good for during the weaning process.

I give these Biscotti biscuits a 4 out of 5 due to the sugar content.

Mamia Junior Mini Rice Cakes
The Mamia Junior mini rice cakes in apple flavour seem to be my son’s new favourite treat.

These are small round rice cakes made from puffed brown wholegrain rice. They are 100% organic and wholegrain with no added salt or sugar. This was the reason I chose these to review.

For 3 rice cakes, which is a recommended serving amount there is; 17 calories, 0.01g salt and 0.8g sugar. They are apple flavoured and they are quite sweet. Each bag contains 9 servings.

These rice cakes are great for small hands. They are about the same size of a poker chip.

I use these rice cakes as a snack in between meals and as a snack whilst we are out and about. They soften up whilst being chewed and my son is able to much away without getting covered in loads of crumbs.

The packet that they come in is a foil bag that seems to hold its shape when you squeeze it shut, which is handy when you only have one hand spare.

These rice cakes will definitely be something I will keep on buying as my son really enjoys them and they are a great little snack. 5 out of 5.

Overall I will definitely be using The Aldi Mamia range from now on. I have absolutely been converted by the quality and value of the items I chose to review. I would highly recommend these items to anyone who has babies and young children and I will be taking a trip to Aldi in the near future to go and see what other fabulous goodies they have for me and my little man.
