As a long time lover of pork pies in general and a definite lover of Melton Mowbray pork pies both my husband and myself were really looking forward to reviewing these limited edition pork pies.

These pies were developed to celebrate a newly refurbished and expanded ‘Shoppe’ which re-opened in June 2024.
This limited-edition pork pie is the delicious and very recognisable Melton Mowbray pork pie topped with ‘Paint the Town Red Ale Chutney’ and then a thin layer of creamy Stilton from a local dairy, Long Clawson, which is melted on top.

Pork pie: They use seasoned uncured out-door bred British pork in their pork pies which is then encased in their own recipe for rich, hot water crust pastry and surrounded by their very tasty bone stock jelly.

Chutney: This chutney is produced by Mr Pitchfork’s Pickles to a specific bespoke recipe. It is described as ‘tangy and packed with fruit which is infused with the marmalade and citrus notes from Round Corner Brewing’s Red Ale’.

Cheese: The Stilton cheese comes from a dairy local to Melton Mowbray, Long Clawson, which has been making English cheeses for over a century and produces award winning Blue Stilton amongst others.

A brief history of Melton Mowbray:
Mary Dickenson-1768-1841 (Grandmother to John Dickenson) is considered the first to use the ‘wooden dolly’ to raise the pastry cases of the ‘hand raised’ Melton Mowbray pork pie. This technique creates the bow-walled appearance that we know and love today.

John Dickenson: Opened his bakery in 1851 on Nottingham Street, exactly where Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe is today.
Dickinson and Morris: Only when Joseph Morris joined in 1886, did the brand Dickinson & Morris came about.

2009: The Melton Mowbray pie now has a PGI (Protected Geographical Indications) Status, which basically means it has to be made within a certain geographical location.

What defines a Melton Mowbray pork pie:  To be considered a Melton Mowbray pork pie there are 3 criteria’s to meet:
1 It must be baked within the PGI boundary of Melton Mowbray. If you draw a line around Stamford, Nottingham, Leicester, Northampton and Grantham, you will find Melton Mowbray is in the middle!

2 It must be made with British uncured pork (grey in appearance not pink like ham) The additives can only be salt, pepper and nutmeg.

3 It must be baked free-standing, not supported in a tin or a hoop.

So, onto the ‘pies’, the reviews of these pies was a little varied, obviously due to personal preferences never the less every single one of us who tasted them agreed that the ‘pork pie’ section of the limited edition pies was lovely, very tasty, delicious and ‘one of the tastiest that I have ever had!

The addition of the chutney and cheese to these pies however was not to everyone’s taste. My husband felt it made the pie a little sweet and he found the cheese a little overpowering, all my sons liked the addition of both the chutney and cheese (and enjoyed these products alongside the pies) and I didn’t mind the additions but really, really enjoyed the chutney added to the pie!

This is a limited edition so hurry if you want to try them, they are recommended to feed 4-6 people (440g/1lb) and should be taken out of the fridge at least 30 minutes before consumption. I think 2-3 people is more realistic unless eating them in addition to other foods.

The limited-edition pies are £7.75 each and can be ordered from: The Best of Melton Pork Pie LIMITED EDITION-Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe, delivery days are Tuesday to Friday and are typically delivered between 8.30-5.30.
