Yesterday (Sunday 16 February 2015) I reviewed the Wonderful World of Trains and Planes in Birmingham. It is a very easy place to get to with plenty of pay and display car parking on the street outside. On a Sunday and bank holidays the parking is free.

This is a museum about different trains from around the world. It is still a work in progress as it only opened last year. So far though a lot of work and effort has gone into building what is there. As well as trains there are 5 computer flight simulators where you can try your hand at flying planes. Also in the future they are putting in a model of the control tower at Birmingham airport and also using pictures taken from the control tower do you can see what it’s like. The museum is set over 3 floors. On one floor there is a large Scalextric track where you can race with your friends around. There is also a wooden train set for children to build and play with. Within the next few weeks Hornby are building a large track layout so children can have a go at running the trains.

You can see many trains from all over the world including Canada, Japan, Switzerland and the royal train plus many more. Each different set explains what each train is and about its history.

There is a coffee shop on the ground floor along with a model shop where you can add to your collection or start your own. There is also a lift so it is accessible to everybody. The tickets are reasonably price with an adult ticket costing just £7 and a family ticket costing £18.50 for 2 adults and 2 children. It is a good place to visit any time especially on a rainy day as it is all inside. It is open from Wednesday to Sunday except for school holidays where it is open longer. I enjoyed my experience today. I would recommend it for anybody. I think young children would enjoy it as there are a lot of things moving around for them to watch. I would like to visit again maybe in a year to see how much work has been done in that time as I think the transformation would be quite spectacular.
