I love to buy myself a unique calendar every year, and I usually gift a couple to family or friends at Christmas as it is something that most people will use. The Wild Nature Calendar is like nothing that I have purchased before, the photographs are stunning and show a side to the wild areas of the UK which I haven’t seen before.

The front cover of this calendar is breath-taking, as you feel as though you are there in person and can hear the waves crashing around the seabirds. I love how the waves appear soft and smooth to the touch, juxtaposed against the roughness of the rock.

It is refreshing to see that the photographs are based in the UK, and in this collection there is a perfect balance between animal and landscape shots which really captures the beauty of nature. A particular favourite is the Jay in February (photographer Guy Edwardes), as the minute details of this beautiful bird and the contrast of the striking blue of its wings is particularly impressive.

The frost touched trees in Perthshire are Novembers offering from the photographer Ross Brown, and this shows such a contrast of colour and texture that it is impossible to believe that this is a photograph and not a painting. This is going to be a lovely addition to my kitchen wall, put a smile on my face each morning and bring some art into my children’s breakfast mornings.

The calendar measures around 30cm squared before opening it up to hang, and is made using thick glossy paper. As you would expect the top page is dedicated to the artwork, with the lower page being the functional portion which is divided up into days. There is plenty of space to write in, the numerical date is large and clear and it is everything that you would want from a calendar in practical terms.

What I especially love is that, below each photograph, you have an explanation and description of what you are looking at. Fascinating for lovers of nature, but I do look forward to chatting with my children about this each month and no doubt searching the internet for further information about what can be seen in the photographs. I really appreciate the map of the UK alongside each description, with the location in which the photograph was taken clearly marked onto the map with a dot. It makes you appreciate the wonderful country that we live in and how much un-spoilt beauty there is in nature.

The Wild Nature Calendar supports the John Muir Trust Charity, which was launched in 1983 under the name of the man who founded modern conservation and was the inspiration for todays’ national parks. The charity works hard to enhance and protect wild spaces and the nature within it.

In honesty the recommended retail price of £13 surprised me as I expected it to be much higher; it is a great price point for a Christmas gift and something that I would imagine would be much appreciated by a broad spectrum of age groups.

I love the design layout, quality of the photographs and the carefully planned commentaries; this is an easy 5 stars out of 5.
