When I Grow Up I Want To Be… is a series of children’s books that covers different professions. In When I Grow Up I Want To Be… a Firefighter! Will’s class is going on a trip to a local fire station but Will is afraid of fires… and of big scary firefighters! They wear big clothes and boots, wear masks and run out of the smoke swinging axes!
Will starts thinking of ways to get out of going and before he knows it the day of the visit arrives and he has a surprisingly amazing day.
While written for the American market this book features American firefighters and equipment but is not that much different from firefighters in the UK so shouldn’t be much of an issue for children reading this book as firefighters are universal heroes.
Along with the story about Will’s fears and how educating people to dispel myths and misconceptions this wonderful story is also filled with lots of facts about the different equipment firefighters use including their clothing, safety equipment and different types of vehicles used for different terrains and types of fires.
If also teaches that it’s good to be afraid of fire and to respect it but with proper extensive training you can control and put out fires.
If also shows that the fire brigade do more than just put out fires.
At the end of the book there is also a home safety checklist, a guide to fire prevention in the home, and a home fire escape plan. This is a great idea to teach children the importance of fire prevention and what to do in the event of a fire.
A perfect story that will engage children’s imaginations while educating them about the role of a firefighter, such as how they all live together in the fire house, what happens when the alarm sounds and the various equipment carried within their vehicles as first responders and not just firefighting equipment but also basic first aid.
Again this is another fun, educational and beautifully read from the When I Grow Up series by Wigu Publishing.
