I need to start with a confession that I’ve only ever owned cheap gloves up until now, often just single layer knitted ones that didn’t actually do much to keep my hands warm so I’ve ended up with them in my coat pockets a lot, which isn’t always practical when out walking on uneven terrain (I’m not the most steady footed at the tops of hills and on rocks). These gloves are a game changer. The weather outside has been bitterly cold, yet my hands in these gloves have been kept toasty warm and definitely not needing to go back in my coat pockets.

Upon opening the packaging, these gloves were very well presented. They are advertised as having ‘superior insulation’. They have 280gm/m² recycled insulation on the upper side and 180gm/m² on the palm side. They come with a warmth rating of 5/5. I can honestly say that my hands have never felt so warm in a glove while out in cold weather. They are reasonably thick as they have layers of insulation but they don’t feel overly chunky and are still flexible to be able to use your hands to pick things up. They are waterproof and windproof so keep your hands snug from any outdoor elements. They are also breathable so your hands don’t end up sweaty inside them.

These gloves come in 5 different sizes. They have a multitude of useful features including a strap at the base of the wrist that can be tightened and a drawcord at the opening of the glove to be extra sure of a close fit and no cold getting in. They also have a handy clip to clip the two together when not in use. Although they have a very practical addition of an elastic wristband and strap, this particular aspect reminded me of having gloves connected by elastic through my coat sleeves when I was a child. They have PU leather palm and fingers for grip. They also have a different material on the inside of the thumb, for effectively cleaning goggles without needing to remove them to do this. They claim to be touchscreen compatible but I struggled with this particular aspect, probably because I’m not used to thick gloves.

Although I’ve only had them for a short time before writing this review, these gloves feel like they are very well made and good quality so they should last a very long time.

The Trekmates website, www.trekmates.co.uk, shows that they have many glove options to keep warm out in various conditions and also do hats and gators. They also do hiking accessories and equipment including bags and sleeping equipment.

I always prefer to buy from UK companies where possible and prefer to support brands that aren’t part of a huge group of companies. I’m pleased to say that TrekMates started with a father and son in 1997 out of a garage in Nottingham and have developed from there. Their current base is listed as being in Hyde. They state. ‘Where possible we have designed our accessories with multi-functional features to increase versatility and value, being able to be used across many different activities, wherever your adventure takes you.’

The weather so far this January has been miserable and cold, with more snow and icy weather predicted. However, with a set of these gloves, my hands will be lovely and cosy and warm when outside. Now I just need to find some socks with similar qualities to stop my toes from going numb!…
