The Stable

We were delighted to be asked to review The Stable whist on holiday in Cornwall. The Stable is a West Country pizza and cider brand with the Fistral Beach site being the sixth. ‘Pizza and Cider?’ I hear you say – well yes it does seem like a strange combination but read on!
The restaurant is set in the main building overlooking Fistral Beach. The location is truly stunning! There is a panoramic window letting you see all of the world famous surfer’s paradise. If you like to people watch then the balcony is the place for you!
We took our children for an early tea, so arrived at 4pm, it was quiet, and we were seated very quickly. We were seated on the large wooden benches in the main area of the restaurant, where we had a fabulous view. The seating is quite communal, large wooden benches which can seat a few parties at a time. Although very aesthetically pleasing, I’m not sure how practical it would have been had it been a busier day. However there are smaller tables in other places in the restaurant. The children were very pleased to find that their menus were actually colouring sheets and they had both got a pot of crayons.
The best way to describe the idea behind The Stable is to use their words:
It’s simple food, that’s simply amazing. We proudly source prime local ingredients from the finest growers and producers in the region to create our totally unique, West Country inspired dishes. It goes without saying that everything is responsibly sourced and prepared. No preservatives go into our food and everything is freshly hand-made from scratch, from our organic sourdough pizza bases to our super spicy Naga chilli oil. Each day our chefs chop, slice, stir, fry and roast fresh ingredients, preparing them for topping our delicious pizzas. We wouldn’t have it any other way.
The food menu comprises of pizza’s, pies, salads and desserts. It sound quite restrictive but there is lots to choose from including the specials. My husband opted for pizza, The Lamb Roast (£10.50) – marinated Cornish lamb, mint, Cornish fiesta goats’ cheese, thyme roasted sweet potato, roast onions, tomato and mozzarella. I went for pizza as well, The Fresh Hawaiian (£10) – West Country smoked ham, tomato, mozzarella, fresh pineapple, avocado and chilli (optional).
Our two children both picked from the Kids Menu, which I must admit I was a little disappointed in after looking at the comprehensive adults menu. There were only three choices of pizza for the children. We went for the meal deal option so the children had Margherita Pizza, salad bites and apple Juice costing £7.50, if we wanted to we could have added a pudding to it for £2.50. My son has a dairy allergy, but the staff were very helpful and just left the cheese off his pizza.
Drinks – The Stable is serious about cider. They regularly have 80+ varieties in stock. My husband is not a cider drinker so stuck to his usual lager, but I tried one of the guest ciders going for the Polgoon Traditional Cornish Cider at £3.80 per pint. I really enjoyed it and would have happily stayed to sample more varieties, I really wish I had also tried the Cider Tasting Board which consists of 5x 200ml ciders for £7.50.
Our food arrived after not very long and it looked delicious! All the pizzas are served on wooden boards with their own pizza cutter. The children loved the pizzas. Our four year old particularly liked to try and cut her pizza herself. The salad bites were also lovely, really nicely prepared spears of carrot and cucumber, and honestly these were devoured first.
I loved my pizza, The Fresh Hawaiian, especially the avocado on it, which I can honestly say I have never tried on a pizza. The base was thin and crispy, but there was also the perfect amount of toppings and cheese. The quality of the ingredients was obvious, you could tell that it was all fresh. My husband had the Roast Lamb pizza, again having never had lamb on a pizza. He thoroughly enjoyed it, although his personal preference would have been not to include the sweet potato.
We opted not to stay for dessert, mainly because our two small children were getting restless, but also because I’m not sure we would have been able to eat anything else!
I would recommend The Stable to anyone. Although £10 may sound like a lot for a pizza, you really do get brilliant food accompanied by amazing views. It is family friendly, and something a little bit different. The service is excellent, they even searched the restaurant for my daughters lost cuddly rabbit. The atmosphere is relaxed and you can just watch the world go by. A must visit in Newquay!
