Tilley Merino Beanie Review

Reviewed by Paul Magnan

I had not come across the company Tilley before so I decided to find out more about them on their website. The company started life back in 1980 and since that time Tilley have made a commitment to crafting products of the highest quality. Their aim is for their products to last over time and to withstand very rugged use. I was amazed and intrigued to read that it takes 23 pairs of hands to make each Tilley hat and that they actually guarantee most of their hats for life against normal wear and tear. Beanies are actually a recent addition to the Tilley range of products.

I love being outdoors, but not being outdoors and cold. Over the years I have had many a beanie hat. I was therefore delighted and excited to be offered a Tilley Merino Beanie to review. They have a good range of colours available – 9 in fact. I was sent a trail green one.

My Merino Beanie arrived quickly in perfect condition. It was well packaged. The first thing I noticed was the quality of the materials used. The product looks gorgeous on and is so warm. I can spend hours outside wearing it and not feel like my head is cold at all. It is far better than any beanies that I have ever owned. I love the fact that the beanie even has a hidden pocket where I can store some cash while I am out walking. From a security point of view, it’s great. You would never think that the beanie would have a hidden pocket. The product has a nice thick rolled brim. It’s been perfectly designed to not be too big or small. Tilley really seem to know their stuff when designing their product range. Whilst the beanie is one size, I think it would fit a good range of head sizes. The fact that it’s made from 100% merino wool is a massive positive for me. It feels so lovely to touch. Whilst it is warm, it is also incredibly soft but most importantly for me, breathable.

It’s features, taken from the Tilley website:

  • 100% non mulesing merino wool
  • 1 x rib knit
  • 7GG sweater knit
  • Brushed yarns used for an extra soft feel
  • Rolled brim with hidden front pocket
  • Durable, breathable and moisture-wicking
  • Fits head up to size 8

The beanies are designed in Canada and are imported into the UK. The fabric is 100% merino wool. The beanie can be machine washed cold and dried flat. It should neither be bleached nor tumble dried. If you would like to find out about the benefits of merino wool, you can read about it here.

I wear this hat out and about so much more so of late than my baseball caps. I have received so many compliments about it. I would recommend the Tilley Merino Beanie plus Tilley as a company to others. Quality products made to last. I can see this beanie being a much-loved item on my head in the cold weather and in my wardrobe during summer for many years to come.
