When I saw Thriller Live is on its UK tour and showing at Aylesbury this weekend I decided I definitely wanted to take my 14 year old daughter to see it. I was surprised how many of the songs I recognised as I would not class myself as a Michael Jackson fan; I’ve always liked his songs and have many fond memories associated with them (including attempting, and failing, to do the moonwalk in school corridors at lunchtime). This show brought many of these memories back and was a thrilling evening’s entertainment to end the Easter holidays.
For those thinking that Thriller Live is a musical telling the story of Michael’s life or a story made using his songs (like Abba’s songs gave us Mamma Mia) it isn’t. It is more like a concert. It is a very well-choreographed collection of some of his greatest songs that celebrates the four decades of his music career. Performed by a team of very talented vocalists and dancers starting with songs such as “I want you back”, “ABC”, and “I’ll be there” with more than 30 hits this was non-stop musical entertainment for 2 + hours. Whilst all the dancers and singers were excellent, Ina Seidou really stood out for me and I hope to see her in more West End shows in the future. Nonetheless, from a performance point of view my favourite number of the show was definitely “Billie Jean” whilst my daughter absolutely loved “Thriller”. Of course, none of the show would be possible without the amazing musicians in the band.
As you would expect, the costumes were bright, colourful and true to the life and times of Michael Jackson. The scenery design was very simple but extremely effective due to the fantastic lighting and graphics which frequently linked seamlessly with the action on stage. There were plenty of opportunities to clap along and join in with songs and people were bopping in their seats and the aisles throughout.
We really enjoyed it, even if it was disappointing to find that there was no story to it.
