I have wanted to watch the international smash hit musical Six for a couple of years but due to the pandemic this show has been delayed until now and I’m delighted the Divorced, Beheaded, LIVE! tour has finally arrived at Blackpool Winter Gardens. Even though I didn’t really know what to expect from this musical, I have heard many good things so was excited to see this modern take on a well-known period of British history.

Think you know the story of Henry VIII’s six wives, well think again. The show opens with six silhouettes who suddenly burst into light, sparkles and music, and this is where the audience are introduced to the six Queens who are all adorned in their own fabulous, colourful and glittery outfit. From the second this show opens to the minute it closes, it provides sensory stimulation aplenty including lots of flashing strobe lighting. Each Queen represents one of the wives of Henry VIII and they all have a story to tell. One by one they step forward to sing and dance us through their hardship of being married to the King. The theatre was packed and after each Queen had performed, the audience erupted into a long rapturous applause. These six talented women were giving it their all on stage and the audience were loving every second.

This is like a history lesson like no other and tells the story from the woman’s perspective when we’re used to hearing the story of the men from their perspective. We learn about who the Queens were before they became just one of Henry VIII’s wives and it really made me want to research them further as they were all accomplished in their own right. There is a strong sense of girl power and female empowerment and as the show progresses so does the applause and encouragement from the audience.

The Queens are supported by a 4 piece all female band who are present on stage throughout the whole show, and it is fantastic to see an all-female cast and band, telling their story their way through music and humour.
The show runtime is 1 hour and 20 minutes but there isn’t an interval, and all six Queens are on stage from start to finish engaging with the audience and making everyone laugh and cheer throughout their performance. The soundtrack for this show is fantastic, upbeat, and catchy and had me humming along to them on the way home. There is even an interactive finale, which is unlike any finale I have seen before and the audience were on their feet and cheering through this part of the show.

This show is a must-see modern musical for anybody over the age of 10 and once you have witnessed this musical spectacular, I’m sure will join me in being a fully-fledged member of the Queendom!
Six is on at Blackpool Winter Gardens until Saturday 3rd September and tickets are available from £23
