Growing up I loved watching The Smurfs on television. I have also loved watching the World Cup on television. Now unless you live in your own little bubble cut off from the outside world you won’t fail to have noticed that it’s the football World Cup time and sadly England are coming home. What better than to combine the two for The Smurfs World Cup Carnival on DVD from Fabulous Films.

The Smurfs World Cup Carnival (released on DVD on 23 June 2014) features 5 football, or should I say Smurfball, and jungle themed episodes:

The Dark-ness Monster – It’s The Smurfs Annual Smurfball Competition and Brainy is unhappy that he has Clumsy on his team. But when Brainy loses his glasses in chocolate he becomes to rely on Clumsy to help him get them back.

The Gargoyle of Quarrel Castle – Due to all the quarrelling in the castle Selwyn and Tallulah’s pet gargoyle, Tharp, flees and takes refuge with The Smurfs. While they are playing Smurfball Tharp kicks the ball into a long furrow and they are unable to get it back so Tharp brings them a new ‘ball’ which holds a dangerous secret when it is kicked.

Love Those Smurfs – The Smurfs just can’t get enough of playing Smurfball but while they are enjoying their game a wicked sorceress casts a spell that makes each Smurf love themselves. Vanity who was the only Smurf that did love himself has to find a way to break the spell.

Small Minded Smurfs – In the rainforest bump into a headhunter who shrinks their heads turning them all into idiots. Clumsy manages to escape and has to find a way to get them back to their former selves.

Jungle Jitterbug – Staying in the rainforest of South America (these Smurfs certainly get about) Vanity Smurf gets Jungle Fever and starts dancing which brings much need rain to the forest and the tribe that live there.

Overall The Smurfs World Cup Carnival is a great collection of Smurfs episodes that will amuse and entertain children and their parents. The running time is 72 minutes long but this seems to fly past. At only £5.99 for the DVD this is smurftastic value for over an hours entertainment, something to watch while you’re waiting for the next World Cup game to begin.

The Smurfs are fun, inoffensive and there is always some kind of moral within the stories.
