I’m always on the lookout for green products and trying to minimise mine and my families impact on the environment. The challenge is that there are certain things I won’t compromise on; like cleanliness in my home but at the same time I endeavour to achieve this in an environmentally friendly way. I was very happy to review some eco products that promised to be kind to the environment and effective in my home. These were the Seep household gloves and the Seep Natural Cellulose Sponges. Both products are equivalent to things I use in my home so I was happy to swap them to experience the difference.
I’m not one to avoid washing up, in fact I’m happy to volunteer but as long as I have gloves on, as my hands don’t take kindly to being subjected to harsh cleaning conditions. These gloves are a lovely turquoise colour but the selling point for me is that they are free from plastic; made from Fairtrade Natural rubber and compostable to boot! I’d never seen natural gloves before and hadn’t even thought to seek them out so this was quite the revelation for me. That alone makes me happy to use them. Knowing that they won’t be going to landfill once finished with and can be chucked into my compost bin, makes me all the more willing to wear them. They were lovely to wear and very comfortable. They’re quite a thin glove so I’m not sure how long they will last but so far so good and in all honesty, for me, this is a fair trade-off to know I’m not adding them to the plastic rubbish that gets piled into my bin each week. In my view, every small change is worth it.
The gloves retail at £4 for a pair, which is a great price for an eco-product that does exactly what it says on the box. Furthermore, they don’t leave a horrible rubber smell on your hands after use as they are lined with a natural cotton flock which adds to the comfort. They also come in recyclable cardboard packaging which is unlike the majority of rubber gloves on the market that are packaged in plastic. They can be purchased from here and there is a discount available if you buy 3 pairs at a time.
Donning my eco-friendly gloves I proceeded to do my washing up using one of the plastic-free cellulose sponges. These have two sides to them; a natural sponge and a loofah for scouring. I’ve always used synthetic all-in-one sponges and scourers, but they don’t last very long; parts of the scourers come off and wash down the sink and I’ve always worried about the microplastics produced by them. The Seep sponges, however, had none of those issues, the sponge was really absorbent and actually, excess water was much easier to squeeze out than with the manmade sponges I’d been using. This meant that when I wiped down kitchen surfaces they didn’t leave them too wet and smeared. The loofah side was great at cleaning stubborn dirt off dishes and didn’t disintegrate at all. I have to admit these sponges look much nicer than the harsh yellow and green-looking things I’d been using previously. This is a brilliant product that will last much longer than my usual one, I’ve been using it multiple times a day for a week now and it’s shown no signs of wear and still looks like new. I’m so pleased with these sponges and intend to keep on using them from now on.
Like the gloves, these are compostable and come in recyclable cardboard packaging – so one less thing to worry about. The sponges can be purchased from here and retail at £9.50 for a pack of 4 with a discount if you buy 3 packs at a time.
I absolutely love these products and even more, I love the ethos and values of Seep. I’ve made a lot of small changes to eco-products and sometimes a product comes along that offers an alternative eco-product that you didn’t know was an option and Seep have provided those out for us. I highly recommend both products and Seep as a company and have to give them a 5/5 for what they are achieving for the environment and their contribution to keeping my home and conscience clean. Thank you Seep!
