This high energy, slapstick comedy attempting to stage a 1920s murder mystery featuring the cast and crew of the ‘Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society’ in a play that goes wrong – is actually going right.

Even before the official beginning of the play, a few of the cast/crew were going around asking if anyone had seen Winston, the dog as he had gone missing. They were still adding props to the set. When trying to fix the mantle, they selected a man from the audience to help hold it in place; he became part of the ‘shambles’ as they continued to prepare the set, stage their annual production – Murder at Haversham Manor.

With a murder, having been committed in the isolated manor during a fierce snowstorm, the inspector arrives and he is determined to solve the crime, focusing on the multiple occupants in the manor – the perfect ingredients for a murder mystery.

As the story unfolds, props disappear, actors are in the wrong place, they forget and repeat their lines as the set starts to fall down around them. Even the technical crew are involved as they blunder with sound and light effects, but the show must go on regardless of the mayhem around them. From one disaster to another the plot unfolds, until the murder is revealed.

This fast-paced comedy is a fantastic way to escape from the outside world for a couple of hours. It is relaxed and pokes fun at itself with the added physical humour of things falling down around their ears makes it suitable for a wide range of audiences and ages.

Just as we caught our breathe from laughing so hard our sides hurt, something else happened and we burst into another loud guffaw. We were not alone the whole theatre shook with laughter, partaking in appropriate parts, and as everyone dispersed we could still hear giggling.

The fun and laughter began before it started and continued long after it ended as we reminisced on the way home the parts we loved. One of the best evenings I have had in a long time!
