I was invited to go and watch the Vienna Festival Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker at The Theatre Royal in Windsor. I took my 5 year old son who is a member of a local dance school but has never seen a live ballet production before. We were both very much looking forward to seeing the show!

I have been to the Theatre Royal several times now and always receive a warm welcome. Parking is easy, there are a couple of car parks just behind the theatre. Before taking our seats we had a drink in the theatre bar and there was a pianist playing which created a lovely ambience – a lovely start to our theatre experience.

The Nutcracker is a simple and enchanting tale of Clara and her magical nutcracker doll. They go on an adventure, fighting with the Mouse King and end up in a magical sweet kingdom. The simplicity of the story makes it suitable for all ages – I didn’t expect my 5 year old to understand the storyline but he did.

The opening scene of a Christmas party included young local dancers from the Heidi Rhodes School of Dance. These dancers were fantastic and had I not have been told, I would have assumed they were part of the Vienna Festival Ballet.

As the show moved on to the next scene my son moved to the edge of his seat, watching in awe of the main dancers – who are wonderfully talented. Throughout the show there was a variety of costumes and scenes – from the rats and soldiers, a clown and lots of sparkly tutus! I couldn’t pick a favourite scene as they were all were so good. Like most ballets, the set was simple yet effective, the costumes made each scene stand out from the last but the choreography and talent of the dancers was what made it for me.

The Nutcracker is set to Tchaikovsky’s beautiful music which is iconic and unforgettable and the whole production was wonderfully relaxing.

The simple story of the nutcracker is beautifully portrayed by the talented Vienna Festival Ballet, it’s a festive and feel good show, I would recommend it to all ages as my son enjoyed it just as much as I did!
