The Matchbox Mysteries by Sally Gardner Review

Reviewed by Sarah Hicks

Thank you Sally Gardner for “The Matchbox Mysteries” book my 7 year old daughter has just finished reading – as most mums to 7 year olds will know, trying to get feedback on anything in their life is incredibly difficult let alone a book review! – but Lily’s first thoughts on this book were scary and brilliant! She’s still of an age where she does enjoy a picture or two so this book ticked that box on her first inspection and the cover is also interestingly appealing – who wouldn’t want to find out more about a purple rabbit wearing mechanical chicken legs? Her favourite character was Emily Vole, who runs the fairy detective agency – Wings & Co, Lily thought she was very funny and clever.

The book made Lily chuckle whist she was reading it most nights – the story is set in Podgy Bottom, there is a magic lamp in Puddliepool-on-Sea, and characters called Herbie Snivelle and Buster Ignatius Spicer! – What’s not to like! It was also a nice change from the overly pink and fluffy type of book usually on offer for Lily’s age range. As mentioned above thank you Sally, we seem to have found a new series of books that Lily will enjoy which is great and we will now seek out the other stories in this series with the confidence that Lily will love them. Also thanks to David Roberts who illustrated this book, fantastically!
