The Life I Lead is a new comedy by James Kettle starring comedian/actor Miles Jupp – famous for his appearances in Mock the Week and dramas such as ‘The Durrells’. It is a biographical account of the life of David Tomlinson. The epitome of an English gentleman, Tomlinson is most well-known for his starring role of Mr Banks in Mary Poppins, what we discover in ‘The Life I Lead’ is how interesting and captivating personal his personal life was.

The Life I Lead is a one man show with Miles Jupp in the role of Tomlinson. Jupp is excellent in the role, capturing Tomlinsons characteristics and mannerisms expertly. Whilst telling the more light-hearted tales he does so with a natural humour and a skip in his step. When telling tales of his life which were more sobering, Jupp takes on more reserved stance and of course the British stiff upper lip.

Prior to watching the Life I Lead I didn’t know much about Tomlinson past his parts in Disney classics. I found it immensely interesting and was captivated throughout. From his relationship with his father and his son, to the tragedy surrounding his first wife. Tales of his life in the states and Walt Disney it was all fascinating, Miles Jupp is outstanding as the story teller.

If like me, you don’t know much about Tomlinson or are a lifelong fan I would recommend ‘The Life I Lead’ as a really enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours.
