With the summer holidays fast approaching, many are hoping to spend their days outside having fun with the children. Thing is, our weather is so unpredictable which makes some games harder to transport from the inside to out.
When I was offered this crazy golf set from The Happy Puzzle Company to review, I was really excited. It looks like so much fun from the box and on the website, and seemed the perfect solution to filling some of those summer hours.
Just as I expected, it was raining when it arrived. No worries though, we took it straight from the box and began to play. There was minimal packaging which was great, and the pieces are very well made and very lightweight.
The box included six brightly coloured course pieces, two golf clubs and two balls. Set up was super fast, simply lay out the pieces and play! My son loved it, and spent a long time rearranging the courses when he’d finished one lay out. It was great for him to use his brain too to map out courses and develop his spatial awareness. I also love how you don’t need a huge space to be able to play it. You can have the pieces inches apart or much further.
We have laminate flooring in the house, and the only thing I’d say is that the balls are very lightweight so sometimes move around after setting them down or roll to the side before they come to a stop still. I do understand the reasoning behind this though, it stops broken windows and ornaments if a ball went awry!! The clubs are also hollow and lightweight, so they shouldn’t smash anything unless hit directly with them. We found playing on a very thin rug worked best.
When the sun came out, we took the crazy golf set outside and made a longer course with plant pots, and various other objects we had outside. The set sits well on the patio or a short lawn (it’s a little light to sit flat on a longer lawn).
My children loved playing with this and it is perfect for the age range, although I wouldn’t necessarily buy this for a twelve year old as a gift, perhaps up to the age of my son who is 8. Saying that, my almost twelve year old loved playing. She is a non mobile wheelchair user, and struggles with strength in her arms but because these were so light, they were perfect for her and she was delighted.
The whole thing, being plastic, is really easy to store and to clean, which is perfect! It is also really transportable – ideal for camping or taking along to a friends house.
If I did have anything I’d like to change , I’d make the balls a little bit heavier. Due to their weight they do move around very easily when on the floor indoors, and they can get caught on unlevel surfaces outdoors. Our grass isn’t long, but it was long enough to stop the light ball from travelling far. Our laminate is level and smooth, but the ball did seem to stop, then move again as it tried to balance itself, then stop, then move. This made it a little frustrating sometimes, although I fully understand why they are so light, no one wants their TV screen or windows smashed. The clubs, I’d perhaps just make them ever so slightly less rounded on the bottom. Otherwise we loved this set and it will definitely be played with a lot this coming summer.
This crazy golf game is aimed at children aged 3-12. I at 39 enjoyed playing and my 2 year old niece did too, so I think depending on the child the age range can be broadened to include siblings. There are no tiny parts, but there are a few parts which come apart like the little swinging doors on two of the course pieces.
You can find the game here at an RRP of £22.99 . Take a look on their website too! They have so many different puzzles and games which I haven’t seen elsewhere which would make perfect gifts. I recommend having a look at the Genius games which have been named in many awards from the UK, Spain, Australia and the USA.
Rating: We give this crazy golf game a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. We felt it was good value for money for the time we spent playing, and we will be playing with it more when the children are off school. The concept is very easy to pick up, as is the set up which over rode any small negativities like the weight of the ball.
