What a brilliant show I have just returned from – The Bodyguard at the Theatre Royal Plymouth! When chosen to do this review I knew we were in for a great evening as shows at this wonderful theatre are always special. With easy access and parking the Theatre Royal Plymouth is a great venue for shows of this calibre.
Having parked in the multi-story car park behind the theatre – where you can pre-pay to save queuing after the production – we made our way to the venue. The bright, busy atmosphere in the foyer – where there is a lovely coffee shop – added to the expectation of the evening. We were warmly greeted by the front of house staff and armed with programme we were directed to our seats.
The opening, when two shots were suddenly fired from the stage, certainly got everyone’s attention and we were quickly drawn into the storyline.
Based on the very successful 1992 film, starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, the story centres on vocal performer Rachel Marron (played by Alexandra Burke) and her young son who are being threatened by a psychopathic stalker. Her production team insist that a bodyguard is hired for their protection and former secret service agent Frank Farmer (played by Casualty star Stuart Reid) is appointed for the job. Despite trying to keep a professional distance from Rachel, his feelings for her soon become obvious and when Rachel eventually accepts that her life is in danger from the stalker, she soon warms to the attention from Frank.
Rachel’s sister Nicky (played by Melissa James) has always had to take second place to Rachel and this pattern continues with her unreciprocated feelings for the bodyguard. Melissa sang several songs during the show and her vocals were amazing – certainly on a par with those of Alexandra Burke.
This show is Alexandra Burke’s stage show debut and she was outstanding in the role she played with wonderful vocals throughout.
The role of the scary stalker was excellent with him having an amazingly crazy manic expression every time he popped up in a scene. Mention must also be given to the young lad playing Fletcher – Rachel’s son – who acted and sang with such confidence.
From the dramatic start, through to the ever famous finale song of ‘I will always love you’ with Rachel raised high above the stage in the spotlight, the show was lively, dramatic and powerful.
The stage effects were brilliant with good use of fireballs, laser lights and video projections onto the backdrops.
Alexandra coped well with her twenty-seven costume changes! Well done back stage helpers!
A great production with numerous Whitney Houston big hit songs, powerfully delivered with the added bonus of a team of very talented dancers.
The whole theatre was on its feet at the end to sing along with the cast – a great party atmosphere to end the evening.
Well done Theatre Royal Plymouth for another fantastic production
