The first thing I’ve got to tell you is I am not a rum drinker.  The only time I’ve ever drunk rum is in a punch when I was on holiday in the Caribbean, but I do like gin and I read recently that spiced rum is the new gin, so I was very keen to try it.  In a similar way to all the innovative small batch gins that are available now, a spiced rum starts with a basic spirit then is made unique by adding spices and flavours.  When opening the bottle the first thing that took me by surprise was that it didn’t have a strong spirit smell, in fact there was hardly any smell at all.  The second surprise came when I poured it into the glass.  I was expecting a dark liquid but it was a beautiful light golden colour.

Then the taste.  So I could get the true taste I chose to drink it neat and without ice.  I read from the bottle that the rum was infused with vanilla, rhubarb and honey.  To be honest I couldn’t really distinguish any of these flavours individually (perhaps this will come with practise).  What I got was the overall blend of spices that reminded me of a mild Christmas cake or Christmas pudding.  The thing I enjoyed most was the lovely soothing warm feeling I got in my throat and then my chest.  Now I am in no way saying that this drink is a miracle medicine but this was my experience.   I had been suffering from an annoying cough for a while and the night I tried this drink was the first night I hadn’t coughed for ten nights.

Overall for me I don’t think spiced rum will ever replace gin, but on a cold winters night a warming drink like this is much more appealing option and it would make a fabulous hot toddy.

Decorrum spiced rum is made in Manchester. On the back of the bottle is the famous worker bee which has been the symbol of Manchester for many years, representing it’s hard working industrial past.  It also tells me that when you purchase this bottle you also adopt a honey bee who helped make the honey in Decorrum.  The bee allocated to my bottle is called Minnie.  Through further research on the Decorrum website I discovered that these bees live in a sanctuary on top of the well known print works building in Manchester City Centre.  I think that is a lovely story and makes such a great connection to the city.

Decorrum spiced rum is 37.5% alcohol by volume and the bottle size is 70cl while on the subject of the bottle I’ve got to say this drink is presented in a very sexy looking bottle , long and lean in matt black with gold lettering in an Art Deco design ,it would make a super valentines gift for the special man in your life.
