My son has been talking for ages about wanting to learn a musical instrument, so when the opportunity came up to review the TEMU 61-Key Portable Electric Piano Keyboard, I leapt at it — who knows, we might have a budding Beethoven on our hands!

The keyboard arrived promptly and was impressively well packaged in a sturdy outer box, complete with polystyrene padding around the edges. It reached us in pristine condition. Inside, we found the piano itself, a USB cable, a mini microphone, a removable music stand, and a multi-lingual instruction sheet.

Measuring 65cm in length and 19cm in depth, it’s a decent size for a child’s keyboard. While the plastic casing feels quite thin and needs to be handled with care, it also makes the keyboard wonderfully lightweight and easy to carry around.

I was genuinely impressed by the range of features packed into this keyboard. It offers 16 tones, 10 rhythms, 6 demo tracks, and even lets you record your own musical creations and play them back. You can also adjust the tempo and volume with just a tap — perfect for little hands exploring the musical possibilities.

The keyboard can be powered either by USB cable plugged direct into the mains or alternatively, 4 x AA batteries (not provided). It isn’t immediately obvious that you can power it using batteries but will be beneficial if you want to make music on the move. As with many electrical items these days, a simple USB cord is provided, rather than the actual plug, so you just need to make sure that you have access to a USB port, which is a little frustrating, as the cable isn’t particularly long either!

One of its standout features is the option to run on batteries, which means the keyboard isn’t confined to one spot — your child can play indoors, outdoors, or wherever inspiration strikes.

The keyboard is very child-friendly with its lightweight design, small keys, perfect for little fingers and a mini plug-in microphone. It doesn’t come with a stand, but as the keyboard is so lightweight, it’s not really an issue to have it sat on your lap or you could pop it on a table, depending on where you wish to play it.

Although it came with a multi-lingual instruction sheet, I found this a little confusing and not very easy to read. I therefore relied mostly on the “tap the button and see what it does” method, which worked pretty well, I think! It helps that the buttons are clearly labelled with their function, but I’m sure for the more musically minded, it would be a lot easier to figure it all out.

This keyboard is currently on sale for an amazingly budget-friendly £11.07, which I think is really fantastic value. Particularly if the new-found love of playing music is a 5 minute wonder! It makes the perfect gift for a beginner and with Christmas looming, would be a brilliant Christmas present for your own Mini Mozart!

The sound from the speakers was pretty good, given the cost of the keyboard. Teamed with the microphone, it’s a decent piece of kit for the price. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who’s child wants to try out a musical instrument, without the commitment to a big financial outlay in the first instance.
