Tonight I have been to see the Award winning musical “The Lion King” at one of my favourite theatres, The Alhambra in Bradford. I’ve not been to this theatre recently but I love visiting as it really has the wow factor and the staff are always very welcoming, friendly and professional.
Act 1 is opened by the character Rafiki (the wise old mandrill monkey) singing “the circle of life”, during this we are treated to a parade of animals making their way onto the stage from different parts of the theatre, the effort and detail that has gone into each of the outfits is totally breathtaking, with the cast members helping to do them even more justice and bring them to life by using their individual movements/expressions.
During Act 1 we are introduced to the main characters, Mufasa (dad of Simba), Scar (Uncle of Simba) and Simba himself. The main characters costumes are just as amazing.
The thoroughly high standard of the musical carried on throughout and had me entertained the whole way through. Each different set treated us to even more outstanding outfits/dancing and brilliantly put together scenery/lighting/music.
Although following a storyline, (which is easy for the children to follow) the musical has incorporated a good mix of traditional tribal dances/songs/outfits and music but has also managed to incorporate bright colourful sets and toe tapping cheery songs which look and feel like they off an animation rather than in front of you on a stage.
There is also comedy throughout for the younger children from Zazu and the amazing teamwork of Timon and Pumbaa, along with some quick witted comedy for the adults to appreciate.
I have to say that this is the only musical production I have seen that I cannot actually choose a favourite part from as the whole show was so captivating throughout. Soooo much attention to detail, imagination, hard work, commitment and talent has been used to put this musical together and it’s really shows from start to end.
I don’t think any review can do this musical the justice that it deserves, you really need to go see this for yourself to appreciate it fully.
This is a musical you defiantly won’t forget.
