This year has been a tough one, this January is like no other January has been and I think a lot of people are trying to take charge of their health in these unprecedented times. One positive thing lots of people are doing to reduce stress on their bodies is reducing the amount of alcohol they are drinking, with some people taking it out of their lifestyle all together. For some people this means removing beer from their diet, but what to do if you really miss the taste? Heineken have come to the rescue with their non alcoholic beer Heineken 0.0.

I was not sure what to expect when asked to review Heineken 0.0, I mean non alcoholic beer is rubbish, right? After giving up alcohol a few years ago I did not miss the hangover, but I did miss the taste and the refreshment of an ice cold beer at the end of a hard day. I have tried many non alcoholic drinks over the years, ones which promised to taste exactly like gin…nope… one which was supposed to be better than the alcoholic version of whiskey…spoiler alert, it wasn’t. There is a huge range of alternatives to alcohol on the market, although I find a lot of them taste like fizzy drinks, and they are all vying for a slice of the market. I have been disappointed many times in the past and have found that a lot of alcohol free beers don’t have the usual taste of beer, are too carbonated and in addition have a horrible after taste. When I was offered the chance to try Heineken 0.0 I was really excited to see what they had to offer, but to be honest I didn’t have very high hopes.

According to Heineken their non alcoholic beer has only 4 ingredients (water, malted barley, hops extract and natural flavourings) and the beer goes through a double brewing process which allows them to remove the alcohol content whilst leaving the beer perfectly balanced. I would say this is a fair statement, the beer does have a lovely balance of fruity notes and doesn’t focus too much on the hops flavour, which I personally find appealing as ‘hoppy’ beer can make me quite bloated. I found the beer to be crisp and fruity, very refreshing when served ice cold and it worked well as a base for a shandy if you prefer a longer drink. Removing the alcohol leaves behind a beer which can be enjoyed by anyone wishing to complete dry January, reduce their alcohol consumption or enjoy a great tasting beer any time of year. Another great thing about Heineken 0.0 is that it contains only 69 calories in the 330ml bottle, great if you are looking to reduce empty calories, or weight loss is your driving force when looking at alcohol free products. The fact that the beer tastes great makes it a fantastic choice for anyone who likes to have the best of both worlds.

I was given the 4 pack of 330ml glass bottles of beer to try but you can also buy a 12 pack of 330ml glass bottles which is great value if you are expecting company or have more than one beer drinker in the house. You can also buy the beer in packs of 6 x 330ml cans if you prefer cans to bottles. The beer is very competitively priced against other non alcoholic beers and I can honestly say I would definitely buy it when I want a drink to take to a party or to enjoy at home, the best non alcoholic beer I have ever tasted.
