If You Were Me and Lived In… Australia by Carole P. Roman Review

Reviewed by Lisa Lambert

If You Were Me and Lived in… Australia is from the series of If You Were Me books written by Carole P. Roman that introduce children to different cultures around the world. The look of the book is very inviting and bright which I find is always a great starting point when dealing with kids. My son has been learning about Australia at school so the book came just at the right time to help him with his studies.

The book starts off to tell you about where Australia is in the world and how it got its name and that it is a continent as well as a country and explains these things as well so that the child can understand. This also prompted questions from Jack and turned into a family discussion about the world and other countries which for us was great as a family.

The book goes on to tell you about the capital, the things people do and the foods they eat. It explains things in a really age appropriate way and there are lots of lovely well illustrated bright pictures to show this as well.

Throughout the book the author show you how the Aussies would say things and there meaning which I think is fantastic and helps the child understand a little about language and although they speak English like we do there are some variations to the meaning and saying. There is a list also at the back of the words which have been used in the book which we found good fun pretending to do the Australian accent and say the words together as a family.

I would certainly recommend this book for children and think the books would be great when you are going on holiday to give the child a bit of an understanding about the country they are going to, culture, food, activities etc… they could look forward to seeing.

Overall a good book, well written, brightly coloured picture that were relevant to the words written, age appropriate.
