However, the eureka moment is provided by the shape – SQUARE EGG EXPERT is, as the name suggests, square and will therefore produce a fried egg that will cover a slice from a standard ‘Tin’ loaf perfectly. Only with the Square Egg Expert, is every bite of a fried egg on toast as good as the last.
As a keen baker I love eggs. I keep my own chickens to ensure a constant supply of good quality fresh eggs and can claim to use eggs every day. So I do like to think I am a bit of an expert when it comes to cooking a good egg. Normally I would go for a nice creamy scrambled egg on toast but that was until I was sent the new GreenPan Square Egg Frying Pan…
It is exactly that – a frying pan that is square which boasts environmentally friendly manufacturing processes (and just happens to be green in colour).
The first thing I wanted to test out was the non-stick claims that the GreenPan company make so I fried an egg without any oil. I am pleased to report that this is indeed the case and the egg slipped straight out onto the toast. This means you can cook an egg slightly more healthily and enjoy a less slippery, greasy egg on toast or in a sandwich.
Top tip: To ensure you get a ‘square’ egg you need to use a large egg in order to cover the surface area – for smaller eggs, add to the frying pan before it is too hot, allowing time for the egg to make its way to edges, otherwise the egg cooks too quickly and you end up with a standard egg splodge. Alternatively, I found that for smaller eggs it was good to crack two into the pan at once.
This frying pan cooks an egg extremely quickly so if you are in a hurry or just really, really hungry, you can expect a fried egg in around a minute. I have also found that the small size of the frying pan makes it ideal to use to fry other things in quick time – for example, I begrudge using my ‘large’ frying pan to quickly fry off garlic when I make garlic bread. The ‘small’ GreenPan is the perfect solution.
Warning: The handle of this frying pan is not covered with a heat resistant material – and as the frying pan is quite small, the handle will more than likely be above the heat so it is essential to use a glove or tea towel when handling. I found this out the hard way! This of course would also apply if you used the GreenPan in the oven, which it allows you to do, but in this instance you would expect the handle to be hot.
Cleaning the Green pan is a doddle. The non-stick surface leaves a clean finish even before a clean, so a quick dunk in some hot soapy water and the cleaning is done.
The GreenPan Square Egg Expert frying pan is a novelty that all egg lovers will enjoy. It makes a fantastic gift (it’s not the same as giving someone a normal frying pan as a gift which may be somewhat less appreciated), and is a real crowd pleaser at breakfast time. It is also a great trick to make eating eggs more fun for kids. I love seeing my square egg on my square bread! Also it makes eating an egg sandwich less messy as you don’t have oily over hangs.
