Can you name something bigger than a house? A college or university? Something you find at a wedding? That doesn’t seem too hard but what if the word has to begin with a particular letter and you are against a time limit. That was the pressure we were under in a new game we played this week called Really Loud Librarians.

We play a lot of board games, always finding some time to play as a family every week. Just the name alone had us intrigued by this one and so we were very excited to play. Really Loud Librarians is from the creators of Exploding Kittens, one of our favourite board games and so another reason we were eager to play this.

Really Loud Librarians is a word (shouting!) party board game. It is suitable for ages 8+, for 2 or more players and takes around 20 minutes to play once set up. The game arrived in an attractive, well made box. Inside was full colour instructions, a one minute egg timer, games board, set of cards and various tokens. The only set up required was popping the pieces from the cardboard and placing the characters in their stands and the we were ready to learn to play.

The instructions were extensive and my son, aged 10, took one look and passed them to me as he thought it looked complicated. But after a quick read through we found the game us actually simple and easy to learn and set up.

Players split into two teams. These teams do not even have to have equal numbers, which I liked as everyone then has the chance to join in. One team is Wilfred and the other is Gertrude. Each team takes it in turn to name items from a given category. The catch is the letter the item must begin with changes as you move around the track. Plus you are against a one minute egg timer. Which goes very fast! We really felt the pressure. After each team has taken a turn whoever went the furthest round the track wins the round.

We really enjoyed this game. We’ve played similar word games before, however some of the categories were rather difficult in this game and that led to panicking which led to some funny answers and we were all soon laughing. It’s the sort of game that can be played over and over and still be fun. It can even be played with just two players or with a big group, even odd numbers, which is ideal for keeping the kids busy over the school holidays. I know we will be getting this out in half term when my children have friends and their cousins visiting.

Overall a fun, well thought out party game. I really like the concept and the librarian characters. It’s a very well made, high quality and all round fun game for all whether it is two players or a whole party playing. Long lasting fun and great for all ages it would make a great alternative Easter gift instead of sweet treats.
